Out of Control Signatures Suggestion

Is anybody else bothered by members signatures that practically fill an 800x600 pixel screen?

Even the 10 liners waste space when the member is active in a discussion. The oversized Sig content is rarely meaningful or entertaining, but certainly repetitive.

I liken these Sigs to SPAM and feel they detract from TDS.

Sigs can be both fun and informative, but should be concise. Not space wasting, bandwidth eating non-sense that sounded good after a 12 pack.

While I would think a 5 line limit on Sigs would be reasonable, I'm way too new here to force my believes on anyone.

I would enjoy seeing a member defined option that would allow me to view only the first 5 lines of other members Signatures. I would understand if a sponsors 5+ line Sig was shown in it's entirety.

There's tons of useful information on this site, but scrolling screens of Sigs I've already seen 20+ times makes it a chore to get through.

An actual annoying example is:

--------------------
1992 F250 regular cab 4x4, stock bed converted to 45* dump, 7.5l gasser, 5 speed

I'm 1 hour north of San Francisco

Looking for a diesel, must be standard transmission! What I might be interested-

F250/F350 regular cab long bed, ZF5 5 speed 4x4 diesel registered as a diesel, bad body is OK since I'll drop mine onto it, plese don't confuse me with logic, I'm a bit attached. Possible interest in an extended cab.

-OR- crew cab dually, can be 4x4 or 4x2, prefer 5 speed, must be diesel.

Either case, automatic or 4 speed is OK, but I'll want to pay a bit less.

Interested in a diesel 4x4 ZF5, rebuildable core is OK.

Flat bed, possibly regular bed.

Pre 1980 4x4 front end or 4x4 parts truck, F250, F350.

Just a suggestion. Thanks to TDS for any consideration and to other members that keep it simple.

Sounds like you might be suffering from signature envy, just kidding and in all seriousness it's part of the fun on here adding new things to our trucks sorry it's such a chore to get through but a lot of money is spent on getting these rigs upgraded call it big boys show and tell.

RVSalesGuy -- If you click on the My Home link near the top of the screen, and then click Edit next to Display preferences, number of shown threads, languages, colors..., and then scroll all the way down, you will see the following option: Do you want to view other user's signatures with their posts?

When I post mulitple times in a thread, I will add my signature to my first post but un-check that option for every remaining post to conserve space and make the thread easier to read.

Cheers from Orlando, FL!

Unless it's changed Jason imposed a 1000 character signature length that is moderated by the S/W ... see his post on 1/17/04 HERE so there is a limit and has been for over a year and a half.

Re: Out of Control Signatures Suggestion

I agree that it is a little frustrating. Most signatures, such as the ones that are included on the people replying to your post are more concise. The ones that take up one line and doubled spaced between each of their improvements, to include wiper blades, floor mats, or a cup holder and the ones that are frustrating.

I have PM's a few people and politely suggested the remove the spacing and shrink their sigs to fit on a few lines instead of taking up the whole page. In fact, I'm going to go see if i can shorten mine up just a little more.

I understand that most here are proud of what they have done to their trucks and like to display that. I am one of those. However, people that want to read through their list of improvements will be just as likely to do so if it is typed out on lines rather than doubled spaced as stated above. I also follow the concept of only including my sig once per thread, unless I forget.

Oh, last thought, I too understand that I can turn off signatures, but that would amount to throwing the baby out with the bath water to me.

Re: Out of Control Signatures Suggestion

Maybe a switch to shut all the signatures off so those that it bothers can do without. I guess I never noticed because I don't read many of them unless I feel there is a reason to because of the post or whatever.

RVSalesGuy

Please find that member's post and click the "notify moderator" button at the bottom of the post. That particular member is violating forum rules by posting want ads in his signature, and it needs to be cleaned up. Myself of one of the other moderators can edit the "wanted" lines and e-mail the member with a reminder on the rules.

That's what moderators are here for.

Thanks

Re: Out of Control Signatures Suggestion

If it really bothers you that much what you need to do is:

Go to My Home at the top of this page;

Click on "Display Preferences" Edit;

Then at the bottom of the page where it says

"Do you want to view others signatures with their post" click on "NO" then submit.

You now will not have to read any signature in any post.

Re: Out of Control Signatures Suggestion

I have a few more than the 4 post count that was mentioned above, and I wholeheartedly agree with what he said, even a 1k limit is a bit much, and turning off ALL sigs as some of you suggest is not an option. If you care tolook, check back on quite a few of my post and read the part where I suggest to a member that he(or she) put in their sig line some info about what we are trying to diagnose via the web, but I'll be danged if I can understand why some one feels the need to brag about"double walled exhaust tips", or "Hella Rallye 4000s on top Hella 550 fogs on bottom, Baldwin Coolant Filter w/Tomztoyz2 special filter holder bracket thingy, dual man sized cup holders for the kid in all of us:-)/ " If you don't know what it is leave it off.. And no I don't have sig line envy, I have enough respect for myself and others not to be a burden to them. Short and concise, makes the whole thing easier to read and understand.

Re: Out of Control Signatures Suggestion

I just wish the things you use to "Link" your sig to pics or pages didnt count towards the 1000,, I bet you could get by with even less charactures if there was a way to NOT count the code to link thinks...
(My sig is long,, I konw.,,, ) But like they say above,, I am proud of my truck,,and the other things mentioned in it!
I guess I SHOULD get into the habit of turning it off for multiple posts...but it sounds like a pain,,,,I will try to remember.
