The Administrator on the 6.9 forum padlocked and is going to delete an interesting and educational thread just because the author used traditional and absolutely harmless symbols to indicate profanity. How petty can you get? These same symbols have been used for over 100 years in newspaper cartoons and political satire read by all age groups and, until this 6.9 forum, no one has apparently been offended. By his logic, this Administrator would likewise padlock and delete any post with such self-proclaimed profanity as 'dag nabit', 'gosh durn it' 'dad blamed' and 'Oh fudge' - all of which can be found in classical literature taught in high schools. I suggest Jason review this matter before this narrow-minded incident is assumed to be standard F-D.com policy.

I suspect you're stretching logic there.
I agree with the WebMaster that we don't need explicit profanity on this website. I'll follow his instructions to delete or edit any post/message I see that includes it. Including obvious four-letter words such as those beginning with S or F and followed by mispelling or substitutions such as "*^$@ .." or even "***".
Now, if you want to use the Dagwood method of cursing such as "*^$@ .." but without any letters to indicate which curse words you're muttering, then it'll probably pass muster with me - maybe not with the WebMaster.
And I've had absolutely no indication that such terms as 'dag nabit', 'gosh durn it' 'dad blamed' and 'Oh fudge' are not O.K. on this website. If you heard it on TV in the '50s then it'll probably pass here.
But gutter language belongs in the gutter - or the bar - or the pool room - not here.

Smokey refers to the "Dagwood method of cursing" and "without any letters to indicate which curse words you're uttering", as passing "muster" with him. Well, Smokey, I am an educated legal linguist (one of those lawyers) and I cannot find any similarity between any of the symbols used in the 6.9 post to any swear word in my vocabularly, and I can assure you, most such words are. The "Dagwood" method is exactly what was used in the 6.9 post, and having read this comic strip from way back when most F-D.com'ers were still in diapers, I have yet to see any objection from any of the public over this "profanity" , read by children, to date.
Now, suppose some uncouth F-D.com poster puts
the words "that blankety-blank van" in his post. Will the good-language police padlock and delete him too? Gentlemen, we are approaching the ridiculous with this instance of language censorship on this forum.
Jason ou might review the post as there is only numbers and symbols in it.No letters or sugestive remarks in it either. If this is the case then pet***k and mill bas**** file are illegal.
I have to agree with Barron on this one.
My .02c worth.

Smokey sez "gutter language belongs in the gutter - or the bar - or the pool room".
If I said "pound-two-star-and-accentmark-percent-dollar-pound-at-VAN" out loud in any of the above three places around here, they would question my sanity, not my profanity.

I am the author of the questionable post.
In using the kinds of symbols I used, I was trying to emphasize the nasty nature of the job at hand. In no way was I really trying to be profane. I have worked on engines since I was a teenager, I'm now 52. During those years I have run into people that hardly ever use profane language until they start twisting nuts and bolts. Then all [(hell)?] breaks out. I am not one of those kind of people. Except for one time yesterday when I slipped and cut my finger. Oh .... and also that one time the back of my hand got gashed. And ....
I try hard not to use profanity because I don't believe it to be professional. But I think all of us at an instance will let something slip out. I believe that this kind of response is a natural one when working on a rig.
I thought that using those sysmbols would convey what kind of job was being under taken. I didn't think they would cause this kind of reaction from this group, considering that every one in the group has let one slip while working on a rig. The symbols didn't seem out of place here. Somewhere else, they would have.
I will refrainfrom using the "dagwood" symbols in the future. I would like to thank the administrators for their time and congratulate them on having one of the most usefull sites I have seen.

Interesting thread...yet I see more bad precedent being set by management.
This, I believe, doesn't bode well.
I can't recall how many posts I've seen that have *$&**(@&% in them yet they stay. Is there a double standard or a simple oversight? You can't be everywhere all the time. Making this place so antiseptic that we have to watch our backs lest we utter or imply one of the "dirty" words will turn others away and I wouldn't want to see that happen. I know for a fact with my shiny degree on the wall of my office at home, I can speak with forked tongue, use appaling amounts of profanity, when needed of course, and still get my point across Using profanity certainly does not constitute a lack of intelligence and I disagree with those that say otherwise, so there

This alleged profane 6.9 posting thread hasn't one profanity in all the replies. I happen to own a 6.9 van and I'm interested in anything happening under the hood of same, especially people doing the impossible like replacng head gaskets. To delete this great technical info thread for some nonsense opinion of what the Dagwood Bumstead swear words are is certainly just plain dumb.

If its true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the OTHERS here for?
>>Smokey refers to the "Dagwood method of cursing" and "without any letters to indicate which curse words you're uttering", as passing "muster" with him.
I am not Smokey. It did not pass muster with me. If Jason tells me to do otherwise, I will. Untill then, I feel I should follow Jason's origional request to remove apparently obscene symbols in place of letters. Since I can't see through everyone else's eyes, I will use my own. I don't feel that I'm being "petty," because I HAVE BEEN DINGED FOR THE EXACT SAME THING. I was primarily using the symbols to indicate intense frusteration and the nasty job I was working on.
I'm talking with Jason to resolve this issue, and I am truly sorry about the controversy it has caused. Hopefully, we'll see a concrete policy on this issue, as it obviously needs to be addressed.
dykstrat> I would like to say that I have absolutly nothing against you at all. In fact, you could be family. (busting knuckles and cutting fingers). I curse more when working on my truck than in all of the rest of my life, many times over actually. I do appreciate the situation.
added on edit:
I did include a copy of the entire thread in my mail message to the topic origionator in order to include in a new thread. He can re-post it.

I can recall the little birds in the 'Charlie Brown' comic strip swearing with "!!!!!!!!!!", so, by all means Charlie Brown must be padlocked and deleted to avoid our children using such profanity. Smokey mentions if you heard words like "dag nabit" on TV back in the 1950's, its probably OK on this forum. But, as a matter of fact, I have yet to HEAR anything from any poster on the forums - there is no audio option available, and if there was, the technology does not exist nor likely to ever, for an audio reader to translate Bumstead symbols into spoken English swear words. And, pray tell, just what is "profanity" anyhow? I raise dogs and nobody gets bent out of shape when a female dog is called a "*****". I can call another human being a "dog" without any language violations. Calling some male mammal a "S-O-B" may be impolite socially, but technically all it says is one of his parents is a dog. Nobody in the U.S. Army ever was reprimanded for calling a troop a "dogface" or a "grunt", and the Army is full of PC minded people.
As for swearing belonging only in gutters, bars and poolhalls, most auto repair shops utilize this form of language extensively in their daily tasks on uncooperative mechanical components. What makes anyone think Ford diesel owners need to use only sterilized language when discussing Ford diesels?
How many F-D.com members actually read any know swear words in Dagwood Bumstead symbols?
If so, clue me in - by email of course, to avoid the official axe.
The now deleted 6.9 thread was a topic of valid interest to 6.9 owners, including me.
If the Administrator found the title so offensive, why not just remove the naughty words (?)in the title and leave the thread for the rest of us to read? I am disappointed in F-D.com.
