At the top of this screen, click on "forums list", then on the "News, Comments and Suggestions" forum. Then notice the sub-forum area at the top of the screen, with topic News, Comments and Suggestions FAQ". Click on that sub-forum FAQ topic and several other threads will pop up. Scroll down to the topic on posting avatars and pics by Dick Cutting. Most of your questions will be answered by Dick's post.
Here's a summary of Dick's post:
Take a good digital photo of your subject, and edit the photo with good photo editing software to turn it into a small but clear photo in JPG format.
Get into the Photos area of TheDieselStop, and upload that photo to your gallery. Then look at that photo in your gallery and click on it until it is at its smallest screen size. If it doesn't show up good in its smallest size, then it won't be a good avatar. So delete that photo and keep trying until you get a good avatar photo posted into your gallery.
Next, right-click on the small photo, then in the window that pops up, click on "properties". Highlight the URL of the photo in that properties window, then right-click on the highlighted URL and copy it into RAM.
Next, go to My Stuff then to My Profile. In My Profile in the window for your avatar URL, right-click on that window, then paste the URL from RAM. Be sure you click on the little button next to the avatar URL window.
That's it.
