Pop up adds Grrrrrrr!

Hey guys I am being bombarded by popups of every discription I Under stand Jason dosent allow pop ups on the forum and am not acusing anyone But is there anything to stop em before they can install cookies to your browser?I am contiualy emtying my cookie drawer of un wanted cookies.I have a popup stopper but it dosent stop em soon enough to stop em putting cookies on the browser?
If I delete cookies then Im having to reinstall my home page (TDS) as well as every once and awhile the browser homepage gets changed and that REALLY ticks me off!

Re: Pop up adds Grrrrrrr!

You probably have cooties on your computer (spyware)

Get something like adware. I am using SpywareBlaster and Google tool bar / search engine / popup blocker but there are plenty of other good free tools you can download to solve your problem

Re: Pop up adds Grrrrrrr!

Are you running any type of file sharing software..(NOT FOR ANYTHING ILEAGLE LIKE DOWNLOADING music of course)
They,,and the peer to peer file sharing programs will cause it. Also look to see what programs are running all the time on your computer..Ctl Alt Del...click on running processes or something like that.
Anything you dont recognize research and find out what it is.
Good luck,, I fought them for ever...finaly got things settled down.

Re: Pop up adds Grrrrrrr!

AD Aware is a freebie pop up type stopper and spyware blocker.

Spybot Seach and Destroy is my favorite spyware stopper. Free also.

I also have changed my HOSTS file on my computer to completely BLOCK all AD servers. It wont even display the banner. It just shows a "page not found". Love it!

It works on those webpages that have embedded ads that call out to a different webpage than the one your on. YOUR page you wanted to go to still works, but the embedded ad does not. really saves on load time!

If you have windows2000 or XP, and decide to mess with your HOSTS file, make sure you go into services and turn off the HOST service or your computer will slow WAYYYYY down for awhile.

(I noticed that ADS.THEDIESELSTOP.COM is not on the list of blocked servers, so Jason is safe for now, but that is the type of stuff these pre-made HOSTS file blockers add to their lists)

Re: Pop up adds Grrrrrrr!

HERE is an example webpage offering a modified HOSTS file. there are numerous ones out there. some are updated daily (to stop new servers getting in) and other are kinda old.

I just did a quick search on google for "host file" and you can pick and choose from there.

Re: Pop up adds Grrrrrrr!

FF,

I just wanted to say thanks for the heads up on the Hosts file thing....

I decided to give it a try --- at first it wasn't working and it was because the Hosts file I downloaded was automatically saved as a .txt ....

Well I went in and renamed it in DOS window... now its like magic... no more ads no more pop ups... Not that I had many pop ups to begin with ... I am pretty vigilent in removing the offending cookies or reg entries....

Anyways the Hosts thing works and does its job very well... even on MSN.com there are ads that are being blocked so much nicer to not even have to look at them.

Thanks again.

Dave

Re: Pop up adds Grrrrrrr!

When I type in thedieselstop.com in the address line and hit enter I immediately get a pop-up from dieselsite.com. Is that something in my computer or is it the start of some unwanted things happening on TDS? If I go to TDS by using a link in my favorites which takes me directly to the forums I don't get the pop-up.

I have a link directly to the forums in my favorites and let the program remember me for each log in from this computer. I also have AdAware inplace. I do not have to log in, don't get any popups and come straight to where I want to be.

Re: Pop up adds Grrrrrrr!

You are typing in www.dieselstop.com instead of www.thedieselstop.com. The first address is owned by Bob Riley, the second one is ours.
