I would like to add my hearty THANK YOU! to the chorus for turning that abused feature off. I mean Scooby Do and Speedy Gonzalas on an adult site, at the risk of big time flaming, Give Me A Break. As far as I am concerned the signatures have again been allowed to get way to long as well. Mostly what the signatures seem to be is a covert way to brag about how much additional money one has for and is willing to spend on accessories for their rides and other toys.
My area, like most of America, is rural and is just now getting DSL in town. I live miles from the central office so unless some new version of the technology comes out I will never have DSL at home. Digital cable is just now rolling out in town and they claim they will have cable and internet service out to us in about a year. Satellite is a joke unless you only want to be able to access your account from one location, (I log on both at the office and home). They have not yet realized the need to offer fallback phone access in order to get more customers. If I could use the satellite at home and still get into the same account by phone from the office and when out of town, then I would already be on a satellite system. Hopefully the powers that be will understand this at some point in the future.

I don't understand something about this "image" thing... in more than one respect of the word.
There were only a few people who did have a carnival like display of animated cartoons in their signatures. These were generally the same people who have always had mile-long signatures in bold print, with dozens of asterisks and smilies, espousing their political beliefs and association affiliation, etc.
Couldn't just THOSE people have been contacted, and asked to tone down their distracting displays? Perhaps this was already done? Did the respondents did not comply? It seems a shame to disable the ability of those who use these features responsibly, to post graphics that enhance the understanding of the post topic at hand. The MPG and CACKLE thread is an excellent example of a thread where the posted graphics lent an immediacy to the understanding of what was being discussed.
It is almost like the antics of the very few who cannot seem to limit or regulate themselves in this particular area... are dictating and thus limiting the experiences of the many others who are in fact in tune with the desired "image" of F-D.com, and wish to use this site to communicate about Ford diesels, not barking dogs.
I have visited TDR.com, and have found value in how members can post a picture of a fuel pump or whatever right in the post. It really enhances the immediacy of understanding. A picture is worth a thousand words.
Perhaps American Express advertising slogans offer an example to emulate when they say "Membership has it's privileges." Perhaps members who have demostrated an ability to post responsibly, in keeping with topics and threads, in polite and respectable tones, and absent of any need to paint a child's room wall of graphics surrounding their posts, can apply to have the privilege of being able to post graphics. Then, in their desire to retain this privilege, they will be self-governing, reducing the need for moderator police work. Just a thought.

Well said Robyn. Especially now that the dust has settled and my experience at times continues to be a slow server response to start a page load after clicking on a subject. I find myself clicking several times before I get a response. Getting a server response is more of a problem for me than the length of load time due to graphics of the page.
It's what you call the "Shotgun" method. You shoot everyone. That way you are bound to get the guilty party.

I have an ADSL setup that is extremely fast. I also work for a government contractor and have very good internet connections at work. My ADSL at home is so fast that when I go to work I find myself waiting on the system. Since Ford-Diesel changed software, I now find myself waiting and waiting on things to load when I visit F-D.com. This is both before and after Jason turned off the graphics.

I agree. I have a cable modem and I haven't experienced and major gain in speed. Some of the threads open quite fast and others take extreamely long to open.

Well I am not going to argue the privledge of haveing graphics or not haveing them. I do want to mention the same thing "zahndoc" and "nodine" both mentioned above. It now seems that things are kind of settling back to what they were before... mind you I will still love this sight and brouse it faithfully. It does seem slow at times again. I also have a High speed access in Charter Pipeline cable access. It seems to take a little while returning you to the forum after posting, and when changeing threads it seems slow um,,hell,,maybe 50% of the time.
