Question for JLester.

Been having some problems with our ISP(Earthlink). We explained some of the problems via E-mail and were told by techs at Earthlink that we are experiencing something known as "the spiral of death". What in the name of God is that? We made the changes they suggested but are concerned by this statement.

Re: Question for JLester.

Thanks Jason! Kinda' what I thought. We threatened to drop the service because of extremely slow response when on-line. IMO they are over-loaded to the hilt here in Lakeland.(traffic)

Re: Question for JLester.

A little over a year ago my small local ISP was purchased by OneMain, then a few months after that, OneMain was swallowed by Earthlink. I immediately started having e-mail problems the day Earthlink took the helm. When the takeovers occurred, we were allowed to keep our existing e-mail accounts, and were allowed to continue paying 12.95 per month for unlimited access. The e-mail problems consisted of (1) not getting e-mail that was sent to me, (2) receiving e-mail any where from a few hours to several days after it was sent to me.

Well the e-mail troubles were intolerable so I called Earthlink for assistance. They had me try a number of different things over a period of several weeks, but nothing helped. They told me they were having server problems and were in the process of upgrading and the problems would soon go away. Then they blamed it on the fact that we weren't actually dialing into their company (even though they now owned MainOne) Finally the tech recommended that I cancel my old account and then start a new account with Earthlink and of course, get new e-mail addresses and pay the much higher monthly fees. I took his advice. I cancelled my (JPS.net/OneMain.com/Earthlink) account and found another small local ISP. Problems instantly went away.

I suggest you drop Earthlink like a hot potato and find an ISP that has some decent customer service and can provide the service that you pay for.

Re: Question for JLester.

The "death spiral" is a problem that can happen with an analog modem where the modem keeps automagically decreasing it's communication speed due to line problems (or whatever) until there is no data going over the connection and the call terminates. The speed of the connection gets slower and slower until it hangs up. Thus, the "death spiral".

Go to google.com and search for "modem death spiral" and you can read all about it.

Re: Question for JLester.

Mike has it.

For the non techie:

Basically, when an analog modem connects, it tries to negotiate the connection speed with the server it is talking to. Whatever the highest reliable speed is, they use it.

Unfortunately, as I have found out with the phone lines in the Humble, Texas area, line conditions tend to fluctuate from average to downright "sucky" (highly technical term...). When the conditions go bad, the server and modem renegotiate the speed contract. And as Mike said, the speed theoretically can be negotiated down to zero, or very close to it.

Re: Question for JLester.

If you're having email problems it may pay to check out this site nd talk to your ISP. www.orbz.org

I believe earthlink was just put on the blacklist by ORBZ.

Re: Question for JLester.

Rex
It figures! Earthlink was highly recommended to us by a friend of the wife. I said we should do a little more research before we decide to jump on it. Did she listen? NO!
Now she yells(at me I think)when there is a problem while she is online.
Time to "shop".
Any ideas or suggestions?

We live in the sticks, so we're limited to dial-up on ordinary country phone lines. I have USAonline and Darling Wife has AT&T Worldnet. My USAonline is about $22 per month with unlimited time on the internet. Worldnet has various plans, beginning at about $17 for limited log-on time and a lot more for unlimited time. We're both happy with our service.
