Re: Question for JLester.

Not trying to be nosey,,,but why would you need two dial up services? Unless your like me..and on here Alot. It does sound like you should check into the new satilite systems..the old ones used to need dial up too,,because they only downloaded,,now they can transmit and recieve.....heck you may be able to have two computers hooked up at the same time,,,,worth checking into...it would be as cheap as the two services you are paying for now...and faster.

Re: Question for JLester.

Smokey, I guess I'd have the same question as Jim. Why two ISP's.

Most ISP's will give multiple email account in there base monthly service fee. You and the wife could each have your own email.

I'm not sure about your situation but it might be worth checking into. If you travel a lot I go with the one that provides an 800 number for calling in.

Re: Question for JLester.

<blockquote><font class="small">In reply to:</font><hr>

but why would you need two dial up services

<hr></blockquote> We're both on line at the same time. I'm on the "computer line" on Ford-Diesel and she's on the house line doing geneology. Since I'm on several hours a day I need the unlimited time. She's on for only a couple hours per day, so she gets by with the limited-hours of service plan.

We got along for years with one line and one ISP, but I got tired of her kicking me off so she could do her e-mail and geneology stuff, so I got her her own PC and ISP and ordered a 2nd phone line. At first Worldnet was only $4.95 per month. Then they upped it to $10.95. But they won't take any new members at the promotional rate, so the cheapest right now is $16.95 I think.

My son in Denver has cable ISP, so he can have multiple PCs on the internet at the same time. But country dial-up allows only one at a time.

We have DirecTV satellite for the TV, but last time I checked they didn't offer internet access at a reasonable price.

Re: Question for JLester.

Uh Smokey, you know you can put two computers online at the same time. Usually, you can do this for less than $100 (one time charge).

Little network + software magic = both of you online using one dialup connection.

Re: Question for JLester.

green giant

I too had problems with earthlink recently, my original account was with mindspring and everything was great for years. Then earthlink bought them up and the problems started coming in waves. I have a DSL connection and half the time I could not get on, I would call customer service and hold for up to an hour and never get through. I found that the solution was to drop them and go to someone else.

Re: Question for JLester.

I did a quick search for Satilite Internet on Excite...here are just a couple of sights I found,,one of them has Earthlink for its partner tho!...lol
http://www.computermart.com/satellite-internet-access.htm

http://www.sacry.com/High%20Speed.htm

A couple of these look promising if I was in the market.....If your wife does geneology for a living...IE...makes money off of it,,,the ISP and access could be tax deductible.

Re: Question for JLester.

Update
Earthlink sent us instructions to install an extra setting on our modem. Did it. Did not help much. 4 phone numbers to use to connect.
None of them work very good anymore. TOO much traffic on the lines.
Really is B.S.
Time to change I guess. Big question is,do I lose my post count if I change to another ISP with a new E-mail address?

Re: Question for JLester.

Shawn,

Not as good as it sounds on a dial up connection. You think dial up is slow now, try it with two computers on the same line. Been there, done that.

Re: Question for JLester.

Since we are sort of on the subject... has anyone ever connected to the internet through a cell phone? I would also be interested in looking at an ISP that provides an 800 number.

Re: Question for JLester.

Yep, I've done it. Slow, but it works in a pinch. I don't remember the speed for sure, but it seems like it was 14.4.

I have an old Motorola 3-watt bag phone with a modem adapter I use on the road. With a good signal you can get 9600-14000 bps. Not ideal but good enough if you just need to check email or something from time to time.

Re: Question for JLester.

Nick
Prodigy has a decent service . You can connect to your account through any computer in the continental USA.

I did have problems with my e-mail when I converted over to XP OS because they dropped the ball and were not ready for the difference of previous versions of Microsofts' OS. They seem to have that straightend out now though.

On connection speeds / With my older 98 2nd Edit. &amp; Me I seldon got above 36k. On XP seldom below 40k. I have noticed on the handshake that the Xp has an extra, different sounding chirp that the others do not have. When I would get a speed that I considered too slow I would disconnect and then reconnect and it usually would come up some. On the old systems I would have to do that three or four times though. Right now I am at 45.7k.

Re: Question for JLester.

For general browsing, if you are able to connect at anything above 40Kbps, you will be fine. If someone fires up a game a CounterStrike...

Yer up the proverbial creek.

Re: Question for JLester.

I had Earthlink for a few months. they bought out my former ISP. I had a lot of trouble with them, and would have changed if we weren't due for cable modem in a few months. I had a lot of trouble when they first took over. We never got the info on the changeover, when our service quit working, they claimed I had been sent the info 6 weeks earlier, but I never got it. then my userid / password wouldn't work, and I was on the phone several times with their tech support (who were nearly useless). But I did use it with two computer on a network for several months, and with the prior ISP for several months also. We were only getting a 24-26K connection due to poor phone lines, but adding the second computer didn't make it notably slower unless one of us was doing a download. For general browsing and email it worked ok.

We had a lot of busy signals and dropped calls with them.
