Search limited by number of returned topics?

I was attempting a search on "Fuel system" in the '94-97 Upgrades forum and I can't get results older than July of 2007. You can't tell me that the subject line has not existed prior to that time. I am searching in both the subject and body and have tried dates older than one year and newer than one year.

What's the problem?

So I take it that there isn't somewhere out there that can tell me why a search will not return more than 200 hits no matter what time preference I indicate or why I can't get any hits if I specify "older than 1 year"?

The search function is limited to the first 200 hits by default. It can be changed in the control panel by the administrator. However, if the limit is increased, it can start to bog the board down. You will need to search smaller segments when you search for something that will return a lot of hits. You may be able to change your search terms to be more specific and reduce the number of hits.

When you do the "older than 1 year," try also specifying "newer than 2 years."

You won't find anything older than February of 2005, because that's when it was archived.

Or, you can use Google or whatever to search TDS specifically.

This must be something relatively new as I've had multiple hits on searches prior to this. It may be helpful to make this info available via a sticky thread or the FAQ for those of us who don't live on this site.

Anyhow, I was able to find what I was looking for via Google.
