Due to performance issues with the new version of the forum software, I've had to temporarily disable searching. I've submitted a trouble ticket with the company that makes the software to see what we can do to get the performance back where it should be. Sorry for any inconvenience.
I was just going to say, "I can't find the search function!!!"
Heh-heh, now I know why. I probably should read this stuff when something changes!!
Have a good one!!

The search function seemed to work okay on my end prior to it being taken off temporarily, hopefully the software issue will be resolved soon

The lead programmer for this software is making some changes to the configuration in the next day that should help. I'll turn things back on tomorrow and see how it goes. Searches for all posts in the past 24 hours were searching all 700,000+ messages instead of just the past 24 hours. The changes he is making will hopefully take care of it. The problem is only affecting certain versions of the database server that we use.

The archives are on another server and fully searchable. It's the current messages that are causing the problem.

I understand why the difference in the archives and the current forums setup, but personaly (a vote of one of 40,000 ) would like to keep the current forums structure as long as possible because the current system destroys all the links between the two data bases when the current on line information is moved to the off line archive forum structure which I've found lacking in the search capabilities.
Just my $.02 which won't even pay the tax on a cup of coffee anymore

I agree Larry, but it takes some major server iron to keep a database that large online and fully searchable for this many simultaneous users. The current ones are both dual-processor machines maxed out on memory and drive space. They aren't nearly powerful to do that. I guess I feel that as long as the info is there and searchable in some format, that's better than bring the site to its knees when someone is browsing/searching messages that are a couple of years old.

Jason,
I understand and will work with whatever is necessary and that access and speed is more important than convenience.
We will survive and carry on ... success has its
downsides
In some future upgrade searching the archives on usernames would like for me help like for like Mark's old posts to find a particular tidbit. Now it just takes longer, but I also have the luxury of that time thing that many others don't.

I hear compaq makes some really heavy duty servers. Upwards of 100 processors. I think we need to go shopping
Well I've lived and worked in both the Compaq and Dell worlds. For service, reliability and support I'll take Dell any day.
We are currently a complete Compaq shop where we've had terrible reliability and support issues. Were getting ready to switch over to Dell within the next couple of months.
For what it's worth...

We've been Compaq for several years now. We've had some hard drive issues with some desktops over the years, but that's expected when you're talking about 2500+ machines getting beat on by students every day. Our servers have been rock solid though. I think we've had one failed power supply and two failed hard drives.
