Signature Lengths

I just updated the forum software to limit the length of signatures. The new forum software stores the signatures separately from the threads, so storage space is not a concern. The only problem with really long signatures is that they are distracting when you are trying to read the messages. The new limit is 300 characters max. This includes the <BR>'s that are automatically inserted when you hit <RETURN> as well as any UBB code you add. We may increase it depending on how limiting that is.

Thanks,
Jason

Re: Signature Lengths

For those of us that have links in our signature that link to outside pages, the URL for those pages can easily use up a large percentage of the available characters. I have a link to a PhotoPoint album and the URL for it alone is 63 characters. This is not counting the UBB code with which to make this link available. I feel that the max number of characters needs to be increased so that links to photos can be given.

Just my two cents (not necessarily worth it )
Dave

Re: Signature Lengths

Yeah, I just tried changing another setting in my profile and the s/w told my signature was over 300 chars. Copied it into word and it said it was under 300 chars

Anyway it wouldn't let me leave my profile without reducing signature size.

Spent several minutes trying to reduce down. Finally removed all comma's and extra spaces. Looks worse, it's harder to read, but majority of info still there.

I think 400 char's would be better, leaves room for abbr'd truck description and link to photos.

Just my opinion.............

Re: Signature Lengths

FYI so as not to cause a future problem when y'all shorten the sig please leave enough spacing between words so the page will wrap properly. If there are no spaces we all have to scroll to the left/right for each post.

Re: Signature Lengths

Hay guys, Y'all ever wonder just why we want to put so much information in the signatures? I know it's helpful with some of the technical discussion, but is it really important to know that my truck is white, or the brand of oil someone else is using?

Re: Signature Lengths

I'm happy with 3-line signatures, but I agree with Dave. If the 300 character max includes UBB code and URLs, then that is going to make many signatures hardly one line. Photopoint URLs are about 70 characters. I have links to all my mods so people can jump to them easily. My sig is under 3 lines but it is over 900 characters. That is, fewer than 200 characters show up in the post and the other 700 characters are wrapped in UBB code behind the scenes.

I assume the problem is that the software can't differentiate between code and non-code characters. So the choice is either policing a 3-line max after the fact or having the software automatically control the character count in the first place. The automatic control will be much easier for the administrators and should cut down on folks bent out of shape about receiving signature emails and trying to figure out 800x600 stuff. I can live with that.

Re: Signature Lengths

Another thing we could start doing is making sure we always close our posts with our member name. Since we can't search by member name any more including in our memeber name in the text of our posts would provide us with a way for future searches by member name.

Hey Jim,

What does "otra sierra blanca" mean.

Have a good one..

&gt;&gt;What does "otra sierra blanca" mean?&lt;&lt;

It means "other white mountain." Check Smokeywren's signature. He's the original "white mountain."

Re: Signature Lengths

Perhaps two slight changes would help consistancy and reduce page lengths.
1. The Profile page says that signatures up to 500 characters are allowed, but the discussion above says 300. Change the instructions to match the desired allowance.
2. Currently when you post, the default is to list signature, so it must be turned off if not wanted for that post. Perhaps the default should be to NOT show profile, so that one must turn it on if it really relates directly to the post being made.

Re: Signature Lengths

I'm pretty slow so is the limit for our signiture 3 lines or is it 500 characters? Or is it 3 lines with no more than 500 characters?

I'm trying to conform but am confused.

Heck I think the way the system is setup now if it lets you out of the editing of your signiture it is leagal.

Now do not hold me to this, I guess I could put in a dummy to see but I do not want to get jumped 'cause with my luck I would get caught while testing it !!!
