Something to think about in the upgrades and aftermarket 7.3

I found this on the TDR and thought it appropriate for us hear as this type of Discord (I like that word )runs rampant in the 7.3 upgrades and aftermarket.Change a few product names and you pretty much got it all covered.

Re: Something to think about in the upgrades and aftermarket 7.3

Interesting idea... one big problem is how do you ask questions about something then? Seems like that makes it really tough to get a good genuine discussion comparing products although it's tough to get that now

I think everyone just likes to argue once in a while, it's human nature and it's even easier across the internet. You can't make rules to stop it (without ruining the forum)...the people involved just need to take it upon themselves to relax a little you reap what you sow and if you aren't adding any worthwhile comments to the conversation you aren't going to get anything out of it. Even if you had a forum where you could only post 100% verifiable facts, people can still put a spin on the info if they want to, no way around it

Hopefully that strategy works for them, at least it has some points to think about

Re: Something to think about in the upgrades and aftermarket 7.3

The problem really boils down to the fact that we have many different members and personalities...each with their own "agenda" (whether they want to think so or not). Where this really becomes a problem is when the following scenarios come into play...
  1. A member has purchased XYZ product because they feel it is the best. When they see other members discussing products other than XYZ product as the best, they get defensive. Of course, they comment and then the others comment back and pretty soon the thread is making that "flushing noise" as it goes down the tubes...

Let's face it, as human beings we all want to believe that we knew enough to get the "best" widget for our truck. If we didn't think that, we would have purchased a different widget. A point I've tried to make several times in the forums is that "best" is relative. "Best" for one person is not necessarily "best" for another or "best" overall.
  2. Personal Agendas are a big problem. We all have them, but some people don't conceal them as well as others (is that a nice politically correct way to say that?). Sometimes the agendas are related to #1 above (the strong belief that the product someone had is the BEST). Sometimes they are related to the opposite (the strong belief that a particular product SUCKS). Sometimes the agenda appears to be more directed at a single person or company (good or bad, for whatever unknown reason).
The problem with both of these situations is that they generate defensiveness and agression...which degrades the posting to petty battles instead of valuable technical content. Humans will be Humans...I'm not sure that there is really anything that can be done except careful monitoring by the moderators and deletion of postings that are leading the thread astray.

DISCLAIMER: This posting is not directed at any specific individuals. I too am guilty of these offenses (right David???!!! ).

Re: Something to think about in the upgrades and aftermarket 7.3

We here at this site have to our benefit are good moderators that try to nip this bud before it gets out of hand. The thing that raises my ire here on this site is a thread asking about a product and a competing vender jumping in touting his item. That just turns me off from wanting to look at his items for sale. I my opinion, a post like that is off topic and should be deleted since the poster did not ask for info on his item and should not get a "Buy mine instead" response.

Re: Something to think about in the upgrades and aftermarket 7.3

You are exactly right. [sarcasm=on]I love it[sarcasm=off] when someone asks about XYZ product that I sell, I reply with some useful information and then someone else jump in and says "ABC product kicks butt and you should buy it from me". I shake my head every time I see that.

Many times I'll skip right over threads that ask about specific products that I don't sell, even if I sell a competing product. I don't feel that it's my right to hijack any thread I want just because I pay TDS to be a sponsor.

How, if the original question was which "widget" should I buy, it's open territory for any member or vendor to suggest what they think is most suited to that persons needs.

Absolutely!
And most all start that way and great information is passed on by all concerned. Some products like the Turbo cooldown devices are so different that they must be explained (in use) so an educated purchase can be made. It's the human factor of "I bought this one so that makes it the best" ego's that puts our overpaid moderators to task. (Can I say aftermarket HPOP's)

I, for one, do keep note of the venders who respect other venders products and have found that they are also the ones who have the best product support after the sale. And I buy from them.

The point is that you can learn alot on the TDR as they can(most of the time)carry on a healthy discussion without all the whining.

I have a scenario for you. How about when a fellow TDS member steels artwork (T 444E sidebars) and post on another forum and tries to sell it as his own. Then the same thing shows up on e bay.
