I am not ridiculing anyone and I generally don't care about spelling, in this type of medium, as long as I understand what is being conveyed. But it is important to spell the main subject correctly if the search engine is going to be useful.
I mistype and misspell words all the time. I use improper grammar too. This is not about being correct or proper. I only care about being able to find things in the search engine later on.

proud that they can't properly use the basic tools of language. It is
an unavoidable fact that spelling and grammar are critical tools in the

The Spellchecker costs $150.oo per 10,000 hits. Do you want to pony up for that ???????????

I agree to a point. Everyone should try their best to spell correctly. For example, I know I can't spell. That is why I always use another program to compose my post, check it for typos and spelling, then cut and paste over to the forum.
But, as for hammering on people with spelling or grammar problems, that I do not agree with. Some people have strengths in different areas. For example, I know I can't spell, don't have a full grasp of the English language (writing is very labor intensive for me), or a rich vocabulary.
On the other hand, I have a much better ability for reading and learning control diagrams & equations, dynamic equations, and programming algorithms (logic). I remember studying for Ph.D. qualifiers and qualitatively solving some problems in my head just from intuition, and then working out the complex equations to prove my assumptions. I remember sitting in presentations and re-deriving equations in my head on or scratch paper because I thought there may be errors in the persons presentation.
So yes I admit that I may not have the greatest ability to write or eloquently compose, but my strengths lay elsewhere. So unless someone can do long division in their head, estimate (in their head) monthly payments based on a percentage rate and length of the loan, or other such math & technical based thoughts in their head, I don't care much about what they think of my writing or spelling skills.
Now if they can do both, like my friend that I share an office with (Who was on "Want to be a Millionaire"), then I have the utmost respect for that person's intelligence.
With that said illegible posts are not acceptable, but if you can get your point across then great.
Lastly, with respect to searching, that is a legitimate point. On the flip side, usually there will be at least one person to respond that does spell correctly, so the search engines should still pull up the thread.
Off the soap box,
L.J.

I use the greatest little spell checker I've ever seen. It will spell check anything in an edit box. I type my reply and hit the hot key, and BAM, it's checked. It works with just about any type of edit box I've ever used. Best of all it's free! Here's the link to the website where I got it. I got the famous "could not display page" error when I just tried it now though. So, anyone who wants a copy of the program just email me, and I'll send you one. I'd be lost without this little gem.
In edit: Hmmm... might work better if I use the correct address in the link, huh?
