Splitting the forum

I know this has been brought up before but us poor folks in the 94-97 forum really need an upgrade forum. It seems like half of the threads in our forum have something to do with upgrades (ie. injectors, over and over)or new shingalings. All the threads from guys actually having questions about the truck or trying to get help with problems keep getting our threads pushed off the top before they can be seen.

I don't want to sound like a whiner and I'm not sure what is involved with doing a split but it doesn't seem like it would be that big of a deal and wouldn't take up any more space, it would just clean up the clutter that we deal with by having everything concerning the 94-97 trucks jammed up into one forum.

Re: Splitting the forum

Since July 2003 and as of this minute on Monday night, the four different '99-up 7.3L forums have had 4,508 threads. The one '94-'97 forum has had 2,369 threads. So in the last few months the '94-'97 forum has had about half the action as the combined '99-up forums (not including the 6.0L specific forums). But the '94-'97 forum has also had about twice the number of threads as the average '99-up 7.3L forum.

Based strickly on those numbers, I'd say you have at least some case for busting the '94-'97 forum into two forums. So if anybody cares, I'll vote yes.

I TOTALLY agree; the 7.3 and 6.0 are so different you can't have them share a forum. It makes NO sense at all.

Re: Splitting the forum

I don't understand why anybody would NOT want it and I REALLY don't understand GWA's response. I never said anything about sharing a forum with the 6.0's. I wouldn't want that anyway, our threads about modified injectors would be getting mixed up with their threads about heated, vibrating seat covers. Re: Splitting the forum

Well if it helps at all, I'd have no problems seeing the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI forums re-merged. Having them seperate has always been a pain. - Mel

Yeah, regarding the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI, I'd like to see them merged together again. There is just not too much difference between the two.

Re: Splitting the forum

I personally like having one 94-97 forum. There are many times when a question turns into an upgrade and I'd rather not have to look at two different forums as much as I'm on here. Also, a person would probably get less responses to their questions because people that already know most of the stuff about 'strokes will be in the upgrade forum and only newbies will be in the questions forum. I don't like the way the 98.5+ 7.3 forums is set up. -Phillip

Re: Splitting the forum

I think Smokey is "On Target" here. By having a Upgrades & Aftermarket forum for the 94-97 and IDI areas it would keep consistant posting guidelines. 99 + up and 6.0 each have their engine upgrade forums and a general upgrade forum but to post about the upgrades for 94-97 you have to post in the main forum. Not consistant across the board. I think a new upgrade forum for 94-97 + IDI would work well.

There are many posts that should be posted in the appropriate Upgrade forums but get posted in the wrong forum and we have to move them. A little more thought as to the correct forum to post them in would help in those cases. Asking about tire upgrades and camper shells does not belong in an ENGINE upgrade forum.

Dick

Re: Splitting the forum

I think the 94-97 forum needs to stay the way it is. We do not get that maney threads going at one time, that it needs to be broken up.
Plus, Then you get into the mods having to move postings because their in the wrong forum. I think this should be put to a poll, for the guys that are on that forum to decide if it is needed.

I personaly like it the way it is, we never have problems in it and the newbies learn alot reading what the older guys are talking about.

Re: Splitting the forum

I like the idea of splitting the 94-97 forum into 2 sections, but do agree that there will be a lot of confusion as to what topic belongs where...I still get puzzled as to why Larry M locks/moves some threads but not others on the 99+ 7.3 Forums.

Re: Splitting the forum

This thread was started by Bulrid8 in the 1994-1997 forum:

Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is talk in the news forum about splitting the 94-97 forum into two different forums. One for General and one for upgrades. I personaly like it the way it is now and we never have the problems of posts being moved, for being in the wrong forum. So lets take a poll and see what everyone thinks!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The moderator, Larry M, then wrote this:

The only forum where discussions comments on site/forum structure etc. is on topic is the "News, Comments, and Suggestions" forum and since this subject is already being discussed there you should make your comments in that thread. Also, a poll such as this in a specific forum is not very usefull IMO since any TDS member (not just 94-97 members can vote) so it's not very reflective of what a specific group of owners think.

Topic Closed.

Larry M
Moderator

I was struck by the moderator's comments: "...a poll such as this in a specific forum *** is not very reflective of what a specific group of owners think."

Then, based upon this contradictory declaration and with surprising belligerency, the moderator terminated the thread. His signature epitaph rang a little hollow at that moment.

By definition, a forum should encourage the exchange of ideas and opinions. The autocratic extinguishing of a poll for opinions within the specific group most affected is troubling.

Although I now do not have an expectation that my opinion matters, I like the forum the way it is.

Sam

The closed thread is HERE and I believe that you need to take the entire quote and not just selective portions to understand what was said and put it in it's proper context ... leaving out the Also, and especially is not very usefull IMO since any TDS member (not just 94-97 members can vote) are again IMO critical to understanding what I was trying to convey. Since I could have voted in that poll just like a 6.0L, 7.3IDI, 6.9L, non Diesel or non Ford Diesel owner could, there is no way IMO to get reliable results reflective of any specific subgroup of TDS members.

[ QUOTE ]
By definition, a forum should encourage the exchange of ideas and opinions. The autocratic extinguishing of a poll for opinions within the specific group most affected is troubling.

[/ QUOTE ]

As I stated in the two main reasonings for closing the thread was the subject was already in a previous thread (i.e. this one) and it was "off topic" in the 94-97 forum due to the title and first post in the thread. The poll comment if you read my post closely was an Also addition to these two main reasons and was further more an IMO and nothing more and my opinion still hasn't changed . There was no extinguishing of opinions since you can and did post one here which is the proper forum for expressing an opinion on the subject of splitting the 94-97 forum, which you have now done in your closing sentence and it is now at least in front of the only person that will make this decision ... Jason and not buried in a nameless poll in a thread he might never look at.

[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]

Sorry if I came across that way since that wasn't my intention and didn't think anything I said was contradictory or belliegerent in my two sentence post. (not including the "Topic closed" portion specifying the action I was taking as a Moderator in the thread in question).

Finally, please don't confuse my signature as a TDS member just like any other TDS member with my "duties as a moderator" to enforce the site rules.
