Suggestion to Mods and Jason

First I want to say thanks to Dave / Believer45 for the way he handled this thread
http://forums.thedieselstop.com/ubbt...31&fpart=1

and would also like to point out to the other mods that this was and is an excellent example of how to appropriately handle long threads with mostly good info that get a few off topic or heated post that require attention.
In the past most mods delete/pull the person or persons involved and with them take a lot of good post, reason is the way the threaded post work.
Well Dave just proved you can edit the problems and keep the thread in tact. Seems to me the same amount of work is involved and everyone is happy.

Re: Suggestion to Mods and Jason

Well stated, it is nice to see that type of moderation. I know hearing in the past from Moderators though, that they do get tired of the extra work involved in "cleaning up" threads, and it becomes easier just to lock it out, or delete it without taking the time for an explanation.

Seems to me that members on here whose very firt post in a thread is deleted as a peronal attack or a flame need to be warned directly. If they continue that pattern, then they should be locked out. If the clamps were put down a little harder on folks that continue to flame and attack, they will probably just go away, then the moderators job of having to clean up threads they are posting in would seem to be easier. I dunno though, as I'm not and have never been a moderator.

David,

I don't think anyone ever disputed that what Dave did could be done. I have done it myself. The real issue here is that contrary to popular belief, we moderators have lives outside of TDS too. Editing posts takes time, sometimes lots of it. If an email has to be sent to the offenders, it takes even more time. (And no, it is not the same amount of work/time as deleting a post.) In a thread the size of the one you referenced, editing such as he did is certainly possible, but in a thread such as the one I recently closed (8 pages long) and contained a plethora of problems, it is not quite so easy, nor practical.

The simple answer to the problem is everyone following the rules. If everyone would do that one simple thing, the thread will certainly stay open for discussion. Then there is no need for a moderator to do anything other than read like everyone else.

That is what I was referencing. Just curious, how much attention is giving to warning people that repeatedly behave in a manner the violates the rules? Doesn't it make sense that if these people were warned, and then banned if they ignored the warnings, that it would start clearing up some of this?

I know that the moderators have lives outside of TDS, and that you only have 24 hours in a day like the rest of us. But going to all the work to police the threads seems like treating the symptons, rather than getting rid of the disease.

Just my thoughts....

Yep. Been there, done that. For several years. You wouldn't notice because moderations are not usually public - other than the occasional edited post that's not closed or deleted. Lots of folks have gone away. Lots of others have been banned. And as far as I know, the policies haven't changed - the moderators do not tolearate breakers of the site rules. I've made a few friends over the years being a moderator, but lots of folks hate my guts, too.

Didn't work that way during my 5-year stint as a moderator. There's always new guys that haven't got the word. And a few that are very careful to be extremely irritating by skating right along the line of barely acceptable/not quiet unacceptable enough conduct. Thanks Smokey, that was the kind of info I was looking for. That makes a lot of sense, except the part about people hating your guts. I can't imagine anyone hating your guts. In my book, you will be marked in TDS history as one of the most fair and even handed Moderators ever! My hat is off to you for a 5 years of a job well done. LOL, you're a quick study and it will only get harder not easier when folks take exception to what you're trying to do and simply cause waves for the sake of causing waves.

I only lasted 1/2 as long as Smokey and probably for different reasons, but honestly don't miss it much ... but by the same tokin am glad I could give back a little of what TDS has and continues to give me.

When I spent hour(s) trying to clean up 20 page threads I came to the quick conclusion that often either locking it or deleting it was a very viable and acceptable option. If others wanted to take the time to clean things up, the thread could always be reopened or restored which happened on occasion and that was fine with me.

LOL, when you can honestly say like Smokey has said "been there done that" you'll understand ... until then just do the great job you are now doing and "move on". You haven't done the "CAT" thing yet and baby steps are better than jumping into unkown waters.

Both Kevin and you have the "editing" thing down and Dave will be along shortly

Another true statement that I totally agree with.

I'm sure that there will always be someone who takes exception to the rules and wants to make a fuss about being moderated.

But there are also the folks who have responded politely to e-mails about moderations, with an apology for breaking the rules and a thanks for pointing out the error of their ways.

I'll take the second group any day. Usually won't have to e-mail them a second time.

We just try to do our best, that's all we can do.

That is absolutely true in my experience and I sort of felt bad that I did respond to the hundreds of those e-mails but I did a lot of moderating so I guess if any of those read this I should say that

I APPRECIATED YOUR CONSIDERATE REPLY AND UNDERSTANDING TO MY MODERATION E-MAIL

I think I probably got 25 to 50 positives to the one negative in those e-mails or those that "carried" over to the public side of things.

Of course you only have me mostly to blame for your current situation ... LOL

Excuse me but don't the moderators have their own "private moderator section" to have little chit chats like these?
