If you like paying taxes don’t read any further
Everyone that drives a diesel vehicle and pays motor fuels taxes pays higher fuel taxes on a per gallon basis than if you were driving the identical vehicle equipped with a gasoline engine---with the exception of Connecticut that offsets the federal penalty.
These taxes are the combined tax of the individual states plus the federal fuel tax. The federal tax is $0.244/ gal for diesel fuel and $0.184 for gasoline, a $0.06/gal penalty for driving a more fuel-efficient vehicle.
The state tax in 11 states has varying differentials with Florida I think the highest. The Florida differential is variable but currently is $0.09/gal. Seven states have lower tax on diesel than gas, and the remainder of the states taxes both fuels equally.

I have written letters both to my state and federal legislators and copies of them are posted at:
http://forums.ford-diesel.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=31&t=000035
The state letter appears first and the federal letter latter in that thread.
If you agree this is unfair, and counterproductive in reducing oil imports please write your legislators. Please feel free to use my letters in part or whole with the appropriate editing of the numbers.
Your letters can be sent to all Federal Congressmen by email as well as mail. Some State legislators will not have an email option.
What ever you do---write.
