Too Many Closed Topics

Please understand that I have respect for the moderators and the time they put into this sight.

However, I feel this sight is loosing some of its value when posts become closed. I may be in a minority, however, I was still enjoying the 'heaviest load towed' post. We were not to the point of an open brawl yet!

I do agree 100% when posts degrade to a personal attack. That has no place on this board. But if someone happened to exceed their 20K gvwr, I'd like to here it.

Just one opinion,
Scot

Re: Too Many Closed Topics

I did it because I saw what was coming. I really didn't want to see the minor flame there deveop into an all out war so I closed it. I made a judgement call on that one. I actually would like to see who has reached the limit with their truck.

How bout this, if others still want it I will move it over to General Diesel and open it. It looks like it has gone off topic for the last dozen posts.

Re: Too Many Closed Topics

Shawn,

I read the last posts and I beleive I see how that could get out of hand. However, most of the discussion is just what I would expect from this group. You have good representation from the cautious folks, legal folks, and the if the ball fits, pull it folks.

Perhaps threads like this need a wrist slapping prior to cancellation. In most instances I believe the guilty posters would be happy to edit posts so as not to offend.

I'm one vote for re-opening posts such as this.

Re: Too Many Closed Topics

Scot (and All),

I don't know how long you've been using this site, I don't recognize your name, but that doesn't mean anything. Those of us who have been around since 7/97 have seen this happen all too many times. It's better to close them when they're on the verge of getting out of hand.

If anyone has anything else useful to add, by all means open another topic. However, don't just keep rehashing the same things over and over. And, don't re-open a topic just for the sake of re-opening it.

I've been running it this way for almost two years with no problems. We may have lost a handful of users, but that's their loss, not ours.

Re: Too Many Closed Topics

Jason,

I guess you could call me a newbe. I've been around since mid December '98. However, I believe I was one of the first registered users with the new software. I consider your sight a valuable resource.

I understand the need to stop the flame wars. Namely this is true with regards to that darn Ford-Chevy-Dodge argument and anything personal. However, I would like to respectfully suggest that you could contact any offending parties and try to resolve the situation prior to closing the thread. In this way the other peaple that might have something to say can still post.

I have seen you make comments in heated threads on several ocasions. However, I do not know if you considered the results favorable.

I suspect most readers do know realize why the two 'heavy load' threads were closed and thus will repeat the same disrespectful posting.

Keep up the good work!
Scot

Re: Too Many Closed Topics

I don't like "unknown" adminstrators. I think having your name appear will make you think about what you are about to do.

As far as losing people, I still think it's their loss. If they can't abide by the rules of this site, I have no use for them.

When a user registers, a list of restrictions and rules appear before setting up an account. If they don't agree with those rules, they shouldn't register with this site. They should then proceed to the the nearest alt.ford.trucks newsgroup (or one similiar) and try to sift through those messages for a few days. Maybe then they'll appreciate a little moderation.

Jason, Your system is being well managed! Our new moderators are actively involved and may see things differently from you (or us) on occasion but that's OK! The opportunity to participate and learn from each other should be the prime objective. Ah, growing pains! (next thing you'll have to do is develope a mission statement and a business plan - ha ha)

Re: Too Many Closed Topics

Well I'm going to add my 2 cents.
I'm one of the ones that that have been here since the beginning or real close anyway. The 99,s weren't out and they came out in early 98 so its been awhile. Jason and I have had our disagreements and I and many others have had disagreements, we got over it and moved on to other diesel topics. I think that Jason is slipping in his job, he ought to be closing alot more posts. this is Jasons site, that he allows me to be a part of it is great, I don't have to like the way he runs it but I do have to abide by the rules. If I don't like the rules I can go somewhere else, like the Dodge page. I don't have a Dodge but then there's a bunch of people on here that don't have a Ford much less a diesel.
This site is not suppose to be a chat board per-se which it's turning into. It's suppose to be a site for the discussion of FORD DIESELS not a gathering place for the lonly hearts and the wan-a-bes. I got alot more info from this site when there was fifty users, now that theres 1700 it takes an hour to get through the surveys and BS before you can find anything useful. I guess thats what they call progress.
I've got an idea for you Jason, open a page thats requires you to have a Ford diesel before you can participate, there ought to be a way to do it, maybe vin #'s. That would cut down on alot of posts.
I feel better now.

Re: Too Many Closed Topics

I was hoping that Ford would take the ball and run with it using their Owner Connection website. However, it appears that they are only using it for marketing info and the like.

Going to a "Member's-only" type setup would be a big step that I'll have to think over for a while. I agree that some things are getting out of hand. One good thing about the new software is that it is easier to pick and choose which topics to read. I rarely read all the new topics every day.

Re: Too Many Closed Topics

I joined this site a few months back. I have been the proud owner of my PSD Van since April 6th. I have learned a lot since being on this site. I feel the information is well worth the time of sifting through the sometimes misc off topic subjects. In the short time I have been visiting this page I have seen some very off base subjects. I feel that the "new" moderators are doing a great job. The site will only get better as the moderators restrict the garbage that sometimes gets spewed out.

Keep up the good work.

Jason ... GREAT SITE!

Re: Too Many Closed Topics

Well heres my 5cents i think the moderators are doing a great job they need close and move alot of the topics to other.Jason i think that you should make the forums for 99 and up and 97 and 650 etc. and any forum that relates to ford a ford owner only but general topics open to all. Also iam think this ruond up is a great thing and should be add to all forums or somthing on the main page this is chance for all to meet and have a great time.Iam setting up a charter fishing trips with a local captain were is the best forum to put it.

David Sink: That probably would go under "Other". A lot more people are reading the other forum now they know what it is for.

Re: Too Many Closed Topics

Burnickas,

Jason probably won't respond to your to your post because it doesn't merit a responce.
If you'll notice there are no banners all over the place advertising things, Jason doesn't run this site for money. Which I think he should.
As for needing money, well if you don't know what your talking about don't talk. We, the original group tried for over a year to take up money so Jason could upgrade the site, he wouldn't take it. All the stuff that ran the original site came out of his pocket. Finally he said O.K. and he upgraded to better accommodate us. He doesn't charge dues or membership fees and in two years he has never asked for any money.
As for losing people Jason's right it's their loss.
