Unlock The Thread!!!!

Shawn, come on now that didn't sound THAT convincing did it? Ever heard of damage control? I thought that was a good thread with a few twists to it, i.e. American vs. foreign, proven vs. unproven, strong folllowing vs. well you get the idea. Yes I read what they said, that and a dollar might get me a cup of coffee. As long as there is no name calling or childish acts I don't see the problem with leaving it open. That said I understand you tha man!, but can't you lets us play?

Shawn - in case this confuses you - I moved Mark's post from the General Diesel forum. He's talking about the topic you closed on Mercedes diesels,

Re: Unlock The Thread!!!!

No offense, Mark, but I did not enjoy the bickering either. I stopped reading after the second go-around. It was getting personal. No need to let that kind of thing go on - just creates hard feelings and turns others who are not involved off from the site. Best to just let everyone cool down, get some sleep, before someone says something they might regret later.

Re: Unlock The Thread!!!!

I closed it because talking about blue horned elephants would have been more on topic than the last few posts. But Smokey took care of it

Jay warned us- I houled a bit, he let us off the porch with a warning..Some guys did not listen well and the lock went on the gate as warned. Thanks for the run though Jay, my server crashed soon after leaving me on the porch anyway.

Yup, Jay said to settle down, and folks didn't heed the warning. Good call.

Speaking of blue horned elephants, anyone know when the season opens in Southeast Texas this year?

Re: Unlock The Thread!!!!

I apologize for my part in the discussion which seemed to take a nasty turn. I won't go into the reasons why as they are in the original thread. On the other hand, I won't stand by and say nothing when I get bashed for no reason. I will defend myself again if it happens again.

Back in the good old days, gentlemen settled arguements like this with a good drag race between Fords. I still say my stock '36 Ford 85hp flathead 3-window can whup yours, provided I don't pop the clutch too fast and then sit there spinning rubber.

Re: Unlock The Thread!!!!

Is there a thread or forum or electronic area where folks who wanted to "step off the porch" for a while can rail into each other, without fear of the thread being locked?

I shudder at my own suggestion. It sounds barbaric, like the gladiators in Rome.

Yet, I am ashamed to admit that I have derived a limited bit of enjoyment reading the creative ways that Ford owners put down Dodge owners who put down future Chevy owners, who put down Ford owners. And how they all then rally together to put down imaginary Mercedes owners.

This newly proposed forum would be like just like that harmless drag race of '36 Fords, only it would be a dragstrip of supercharged, overblown, hot air injected attitudes. Fun stuff.

Some simple rules. No threats to life or property and No vulgar language (other than incompletely spelled euphemisms already commonly in use here).

Maybe this area already exists. Forgive me if I haven't made proper use of the search feature. Maybe everyone's been there, done that, got tired of it, or discovered things didn't work out, or got out of control. Whose control? I suppose it depends on one's tolerance level.

I understand about maintaining this excellent site's credibility as a respectful and respectable resource of information. A priority, without a doubt, that I applaud.

But, you have to admit, ever since the maturation of the automotive age, there has always been this rivalry between proud owners of the Big Three automaker's products. It is a rivalry that is woven into the fabric of Americana. The threads to this fabric may get locked from these forums, but it will be a long time before they get cut from these Americans.

Give them a venue. A roped ring. An "OK" corral. A place to say, "hey let's take this
outside." Of course they can just e-mail each other, but then it WOULD be too personal. Much of this banter is just for show. Besides, how could I read it, then.

Anyway, this hairbrained idea may not be unique, and may get this thread shut down. I will say no more. It's hard enough admitting what I already have. By the way, I wonder how many hits that thread would get? There could be catagories like FedEx diesel parcel delivery trucks VS. UPS brown delivery....

Ok. Censors are a coming...

Thanks,

Robyn

"A place to say, "hey let's take this outside."

I like things the way they are. This site is supposed to be a "gentleman's and gentlewoman's site". No flame wars like on so many other Internet sites or Usenet. If you can't have a civil debate, take it elswhere. I see no reason to provide an area to take the gloves off.

Thanks, Jason for the rules and moderation.

Re: Unlock The Thread!!!!

A "rudeness" forum? A place where we can beat on each other and say hurtful things to each other, in public so others can enjoy the spectacle and virtual bloodletting?

No thanks. That would turn this site into a Jerry Springer version of itself. I could foresee all kinds of problems - things get out of control, someone takes it a bit to far, another person decides he is going to drive on over and take it up in person, you get the idea. Sorry, Robyn, no offense meant, but I vote a very emphatic "no".

Nothing wrong in being polite. Nor is there something wrong with letting real or imagined slights go unanswered. Someone wants to diss you? So what? What are they to you? Why give someone you don't know so much power over you? Let it go. Life's short enough without wasting time on fighting with each other.

There are dozens of such www sites, maybe hundreds, perhaps thousands!

But this ain't one of them.

Come here to discuss Ford diesel-powered pickups and medium-duty trucks. If you want to bash brands, do it on some other website. If you want to step off the porch, or take off the gloves, do it on some other website. There are lots of them available. This ain't one of them.

Thanx to our WebMaster, Jason Lester, for that. That's what he wants. As one of his elves, that's what I plan to enforce.

Re: Unlock The Thread!!!!

Well, I've been straightened out. And quick.

SmokeyWren said that there are plenty of sites for "stepping off the porch." I've not seen one. And it just occured to me why. Because I never have been drawn to such sites...they never are mentioned in the web-circles I frequent. Never heard of them. Never sought them out. They never get recommended. And they probably never last.

Nor would this forum last, from what you all say, if it were to entertain such an idea.

Please, don't misunderstand, I'm not actively looking for such venues. I was merely exploring an idea, while internally struggling with this central idea of censorship.

If I were smart enough to see all sides to an issue myself, I wouldn't need to be frequenting a bulletin board. By taking the risk of suggesting something on the "iffy" side, I was reminded by Kreynol2 that some people might take things too far. That wouldn't have been on my list of possibilities.

I have posted at Ford-Diesel only a few times, but many more times at other truck/RV sites over the past couple of years. In all, I've endeavered to maintain a respectful politeness in all writings. I'm not one to step out on the porch, virtual or otherwise.

Still, though I hate to admit it, I always got a chuckle out of hearing non-sensical brand-name debates. Guess it reminds me of my neighbors who won't let me park or drive my Ford on their property, but I can walk in their house unannounced anytime, and help myself to food in their kitchen or tools in their shop. I can ride their horses, drive all of their Chevrolets, and often take their kids to school. Just not in my Ford. It's a silly, harmless, good neighborly joke to us.

But I know that "us" isn't the world. And joke isn't that funny of a word to some.

Ok. Thanks for the feedback.

Robyn
