C'mon moderators, this isn't TheDieselPage. Since when do we close threads when they get to 4 pages in length? Sorry guys, I usually don't disagree, but I see absolutely no reason for this. It was the first PSD Vs. Duramax thread in General Diesel that has ever been civil. I don't see why it was closed. No reason whatsoever.

Wow, havoc on the system? Nobody better open up the "Occupation Survey" thread until they have a chance to close that one down too! It's well over 300 posts long!
Re: We close threads now because they're too long?
I was making an assumption, but that one post is REALLY long, so who knows?

Maybe you are intended to just restart where you left off. It probably caused havac on the system downloading 4 pages everytime someone clicks on the thread. I doubt they meant for the conversation to end.

Re: We close threads now because they're too long?
I think it's a good idea to close because of length. All you have to do is open another one, especially when you're encouraged to do so by the moderator who closed it. They become kind of a hassle when it gets to 4 or 5 pages long.

Oh ok I see the logic, open up a new thread so that when "new" people read it you get to say the same things over again??? You'll just repeat yourself is all your gonna accomplish. If its a hassle to read it..then don't problem solved.

And the hassle level is about the same whether it's 5 separate topics or a single topic with 5 pages... IMO

Re: We close threads now because they're too long?
I find them to be very annoying when they are 4 pages long.
I am not endowed with a speedy modem. As thread length gets towards twenty five I can sit for over 30 seconds waiting for page one to load. Then I will likely want to see what I didn't see for a whole day. Which usually includes page three and depending how much activity is on page 4 then I can wait as much as a minute and a half on viewing the 3 pages. This is especially annoying when all you want to see is that 24th post on page 3 and all of page 4.
So I try to feel the pain of those with similarly slow modems and cut them at the end of 4 pages. Sorry that is a personal preference. If that is wrong I will stop that policy.
Or if there was some way that the page link could come up when the header came up then hey I would stop it completely.
So That is the rest of the Story!!!
Keith

I feel your pain Keith, as my modem is slow as well. However, I like this page better than others because the moderators don't usually pull stunts like that. I just wanted to express my disagreement with that sort of policy. I find that more annoying than waiting for the messeges to load.
I didn't want to start a mess, and I'm not so sure that I even posted in that thread, I just thought that a civil thread about the Duramax shouldn't be closed becuase it'd be the first one that didn't end in flaming since we first heard of the Duramax.
Re: We close threads now because they're too long?
Tim,how about clarifying your comments a little.Do you think the moderator was "pulling a stunt" or doing what he thought best for Ford Diesel.Com?I am almost tempted to think you are putting your mouth into gear before your brain.I would think a lot of people would find that comment very offensive.
Re: We close threads now because they're too long?
Tim,
Say what you wish but you are in fact calling me a liar. I don't need to lie here or anywhere to make my point. I am too large and intelligent to stoop that low. I say what I mean and mean what I say. I have edited for length before and know of other moderators who have done the same. It is not that common but It does happen. I have done it at least 3 times in the Events and rallies forum. Many more times in Gen Diesel and the Other forums. You can search for them in my posts. Many who run the rallies even have asked me to close them due to length. So Stunt it is not. I think you should listen to Ray and slow down a little.
Spepin
I have a 56k modem and usually hit at 52000. It is still slow and I figure that most of the users on this site have what I have or worse and thus my intentions were to provide a nice experience for all of us. Quite shallow of you to think I did it for just me. I couldn't care what is in the threads. I just read them and make sure they don't go bad.
It was my personal discretion of what I believe was best for all. There is no moderators rule book here. I am sorry if some of you did not like it. I would not moderate the occupation survey because it is making up for the fact that there is no user database here. It pops up again and again. Kinda doing what it is supposed to do. There have been many thoughts on the Duramax and I like the engine design from what I have seen in pictures. One of the other ones I moderated for length was a cummins one. Jthorpe had taken part of it. I even told them to start another. They did!
I do not see the difference if you continued the discussion on another calling Duramax vs PsD ...continued.
I think you both are making way too much of this and I frankly have done all I can to help you fellas understand.
Thanks
Keith
