we need a tranny forum

does this not make sense? My tranny thread just got moved to a section where very few look. It seems the trans questions are everywhere and it is impossible to keep up with the stuff. My 2 cents.

Re: we need a tranny forum

A tranny forum sounds like a good idea. Good technical knowledge to interest members of TDS. The thought can quickly be shot down in flames.
Good suggestion though. I hope it is taken into consideration.

Re: we need a tranny forum

I agree . I am a constant reader, rare poster and have spent $$ with several sponsors. I have been a member for a couple of years and have found tranny research a little frustrating. Granted you can have too many forums, but when I have had tranny questions I have had to do multiple searches in multiple forums. Even though I am fairly adept at using +/- and other terms it was still tedious. I see others posting tranny/clutch questions all over the place; sometimes they get moved sometimes not. If there was a tranny forum even newbies would know to post their questions there and look there. I seldom read "general diesel" unless the latest topic that shows up in the forums list catches my eye. Have to say though that NO user group can be all things to all people. This is a great forum and my thanks to those that make it happen.

Best Regards,

Jeff

A tranny forum would be nice. Maybe we could add a wheel and tire forum. How about paint, or maybe even windshield wipers?

I just checked both the U&A-General Forum and the U&A-7.3L Engine Forum. U&A general had 15 total viewing, while U&A 7.3L had 33 total viewing. So even though it's not quite half the number of viewers I don't think that qualifies as "very few".

It never hurts to broaden one's horizons. You may focus on tranny's, but there's lots more than that here on TDS.

I'm not sure about a separate tranny forum, but I do think the layout for the 99+ SDs is getting confusing and if the new 6.4L engine is added in there things will only get more confusing.

It's sort of confusing now in the T&H forums since GCWR varies a lot and things like mpg and towing characteristics vary between all the like 6 or so different models - engine/drivetrain setups.

I think having some common forums (such as the Gen Q's and Gen U&A in the current 99+ section) that are applicable to different drivetrain or even significant model years might not be such a hot idea. You two threads here sort of point this out

It seems the last significant change when the 94-97 forum was split out got a positive review and maybe something along that take should be looked at for all models except maybe for the E-series, 7.3L IDI, 6.9L, and Gas Engine forums.

Re: we need a tranny forum

you can take the total of all the posts in the towing and bio forums plus one or two others and all the tranny posts scattered throughout the site would still top it.

Re: we need a tranny forum

There will never be enough forums to satisfy everybody.

If we had a tranny forum, it would be confusing to have the TorqueShift, 4R100, E40D, 5-speed ZF, and 6-speed ZF trannies all in the same forum. So then we'd need 5 forums just for the trannies. Then we'd probably need an upgrades and aftermarket forum for at least the 6-speed manual guys to discuss their LUK clutches, and for the 4R100 guys to brag about their Brian's Truck Shop (BTS) rebuild, etc. So that's 10 new forums?

Where does it end?

I know that if I want to read about my 4R100 tranny, it's probably going to be in the '99-up 7.3L Engine and Drivetrain Forum. Maybe in the '99-up 7.3L Upgrades and Aftermarket forum for the good stuff such as a BTS bulletproofing.

So I don't agree that we need more forums until the 6.0L engine is replaced by something different.

Re: we need a tranny forum

Well what we really need is a tranny FAQ.

The same questions come up every few days in the IDI forums on the E4OD / 4R100. It starts with "my trans is acting up" and finishes with "how much is a new trans". 9 times out of 10 it's just a bad sensor out of a handful of sensors. The ones that post are the lucky ones, there are many more than drop in a new trans, only to have the same problems so they just keep driving and ruin a new trans.

Re: we need a tranny forum

I have just removed several posts that had resorted to nothing more than bashing. This one is done.
