What makes the site run very slow

5 AM and the site is so slow it about stops. Just wondering. There can't be that many people on line slowing it down. I have cable modem with a super high speed computer and all other sites I log on to are OK. Now back on our site 1/2 hour later it is running fine. Any Ideas?

Some nightly processes like backups and such run around that time.

I thought that was what I was seeing where the site won't respond at least in the forums area. For the longest time it was like 2 but not more than 3 to 4 minutes starting right around 5:45AM EST. Now it looks like it starts around 5:50AM EST. When I first noticed it, I thought it was either my ISP or computer, but after it happened like clockwork I figured it was some kind of scheduled site maintenance.

Aaahhh...I've noticed the site virtually stops almost every morning at around 0550 for me. Know I know why!

Re: What makes the site run very slow

I've been noticing the "slow-down" for the past couple of days. It has been happening at all times of the day/eve. Sometimes it just hangs... It has also been happening to the photo site. I have never seen this here before. That's why I popped in here to see what was going on.

Re: What makes the site run very slow

Re: What makes the site run very slow

I'm sure the site is slower than it was even a few months ago, or it sure does take a long time at times.
In the beginning it was "BANG" with every click of the mouse, and now it takes quite some time.
The odd time it times out...and I hit "refresh" and it will often "eventually" come up.
The odd time I will bring up a game of "Hearts" for the wait between one hit to the next.

Re: What makes the site run very slow: No, what makes it so FAST!!

I haven't been by in a while (couldn't find the new URL after the changeover). And while there are little burps in terms of server speed, I'm actually REALLY impressed with how well it all works, given the traffic.

Jason posted this explanation of the server set-up over a year ago:

I'm really curious as to the latest. Jason, are you still using pretty much the same hardware and software? Do you have to do a lot of tweaking to make this thing work at this insane traffic level (congrats for the site's success, btw!)

Re: What makes the site run very slow: No, what makes it so FAST!!

Actually, there have been some changes since that post.

We're now on a faster link to the Internet with multiple feeds. The co-lo facility also has full backup power, which means no downtime at all. The servers are still the same, except that the pounder server has been eliminated.

Our traffic has gone way up since that post too. We're now doing over 300,000 pageviews per day. We set a new record last month with 11,000,000+ pageviews for the month.

We're averaging 22-25 new users per day and 1500-2000 new posts each day.

I have been looking at another upgrade either around Christmas or after the first of the year. Both servers would be replaced with faster ones and we would move to an even faster co-lo facility. Nothing is concrete yet though.
