Whats your thoughts on "signature" length?

I realize that there needs to be some sort of length limit on a signature, but in saying that, I can also say to those that have put "links" in their signatures...thank you, for doing so, as I find links very helpful if I'm looking for a specific issue.
In saying that, I find my own signature not to be all that lengthy, yet it still gives a member the main mods that I've done and a little about my truck.

One problem though, is when you add links to your signature, the address to that link can be VERY lengthy, thus cutting down how much you can put into your signature.
To be able to put more links, I'd have to cut out basically everything about my truck in order to do this.

I don't know if it's even possible, but I'm thinking that for those of us that would like "options" (such as lengthening our signature) or for that matter anything else, it would be nice if there where a "fee" for doing a specific option perhaps?
There seems to be fees and options for just about anything else in life (so long as there is a buyer) so I wondered if it would be worthwhile for Jason to have a fee structure at least for "other" options that may be available to forum members? I don't know if it would be more of a pain in just handling the money etc. than it would be worth, but I thought I would ask at least?

What are the maximum characters that can go into a sig? I do know once the http:// and the rest of the link is added, it sure uses up characters in a hurry!

Some may not find links in a signature are needed, but I find I'm using others links (in their sig) darn near every day!

Thanks...what are your thoughts?

Dale

Re: Whats your thoughts on "signature" length?

Some are not signatures. They bill boards for products, free advertising and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to long.

Something around five lines should suffice I would think

Some are so long as to be irritatingly ostentatious gratuitous displays of poor taste. Hear, Hear on signature limits.

Yeah, some signatures are too long. I have a lot of worthless information but it helps me remember how much $$ I've wasted.

Re: Whats your thoughts on "signature" length?

Some memebers signatures are a bit rediculous. I can understand the original point about UBB coded links using you space up quickly. I guess what would be ideal would be to have a standard signature format that allows everyone the ability to put their mods and links in in a similar format. It sounds kind of conformist in nature but it would make everyone sig a more valuable part of the forum experience.

Re: Whats your thoughts on "signature" length?

I'm not the King. But if I were, signatures would be limited to 198 characters and spaces. That's three "normal" lines of 66 characters per line. If that's not enough, tough tutti.

For a while Jason limited sigs to 3 lines when viewed at a "normal" internet resulution of 640x800. By administrative order. But the volunteer moderators were spending all our time moderating sig length. I voted to programatically limit the sig length to 198 characters and spaces, but the folks with umpteen links complained, and Jason relented, so it's now a lot more than 198 chacters.

But you guys with long sigs better hope nobody elects me King!

Re: Whats your thoughts on "signature" length?

Some are a bit long, some sigs are very usefull, some are entertaining, and some are just a waste of space.
I personally think something between 3-6 lines should be a big plenty. I have a reasonably large screen resolution, so it cuts down the # of lines, but even still some are very long. I can't imagine what them long ones would look like with a smaller resolution.

Ok Smokey...you won't get my vote then!

I often will look through posts, only to look at the sigs! I find them entertaining (a few) and the links very very useful!

To each his/her own I guess...

Re: Whats your thoughts on "signature" length?

I've seen lawnmowers (yes, a lawnmower), dirt bikes, snowmobiles, 4 wheelers, boats and other totally unrelated truck stuff in peoples signatures, kind of rediculous since it doesn't relate to the context of this site. Does this mean I should include the other 20 items that have engines too? Heck, I got a new weedwacker for Christmas, maybe that would look nice in my signature.....

There are the other signatures that do relate to the truck, but every option has it's own line which is nearly as silly.

Such as:
Westin Side steps
XYZ trailer brake controller
Fog lights
Bilstein shocks
Honk if you're gay bumper sticker
Fuzzy dice from RVM

You get the idea.

When I do I'll be sure to keep them out of my signature.

A tad hypocritical here, Smokey, considering your signature is LONGER THAN THAT.

Re: Whats your thoughts on "signature" length?

Just out of curiosity, how is Smokey being hypocritical here. He was conforming when there was a limit and I'm sure he'll conform -if- a limit is placed.

I'm OK with longer signatures but, wouldn't care if Jason limited them. I would just use a link, it gets distracting when you have 29 lines of signature and a one line post, don't you think?
