Who closes threads??

Just wondered who has the authority to close threads and what is the critera for closing a thread? In particular, my question is regarding the Off Subject thread. Why not have a Politics and Religion thread? As long as it doesn't get personal, it would give us a chance to give a good rant.

A Politics and Religion thread on a truck site?
I'm trying to figure out an advantage.
Seems as though there may be a multitude of sites just for such, why bring it here?

Why not, we all have opinions whether it be gassers vs diesels or whatever. You could say the same thing about that. How about nothing talked about but Fords? I would rather talk to my truck buddies about politics and religion than some other types.

Any of the volunteer moderators or our one paid administrator. There are five or six of us volunteers active right now: RDG (Bob), Dick Cutting, Believer45 (Dave), klhansen (Kevin), johnm (John) and me. Username Administrator (Nadeem) doesn't usually get involved with moderation, but he has the keys to the vault if he needs them.

It it goes off-topic, or deteriorates into name-calling or shouting. As one of those guys on the Supreme Court said, I can't define it, but I'll know it when I see it.

Religion or politics were never allowed to be discussed in the "other" or "off topic" forums. There are numerous other websites with forums where those discussions can be held.

It always gets personal and degenerates into personal attacks. How could you be so stupid as to not believe in my religion? How could you be so ignorant as to not agree with my politics? So the moderators's job becomes difficult and time consuming. Go to any forum that discusses religion or politics or both and you'll see what I mean.

That's one of the reasons I like to read the off topic forum sometimes...It's entertaining to see how narrow minded some people can be..other times it is nice to see how intelligent some people can be.....I for one think the moderators do a good job most of the time, they stop "fights" on a "T" KO a little early once in a while but I understand thier job and I for one wouldn't want it

Well said bro. Look if your using a truck enthusiast site as a vessel to regurgitate your political/religious views, your wrong. Thats the reason I left PSN. Why would you want to drive divisions between people? Or make people feel unwelcome because they dont subscribe to the same school of thought you do? This site brings people together from all over, for knowledge, understanding, and enjoyment. Im sure there are thousands of web based venues where you can discuss current affairs and stir up debate, most people on here want to talk trucks.

So true
I am new here and enjoying every minute. Although I seldom post,I spend a lot of time reading on the"Stop" (retired don'tca know)and don't miss the hatful comments that were made on the previous forums where I hung out before. One group of RVers were going along as a happy group until jokes started getting more ethnic, religion related &political . It was unbeleivable how swiftly things got nasty and threads had to be locked. Before the firestorm had been tamped down one of the admins took time away and did not perticipate for almost two weeks. I drop in on that forum ocasionaly and some have never resumed activity and others are more guarded in conversation now,not a joyful sight,or should that be"site" Yes sir Mr Mods, ignoring what others think about our truck is far easier than what they have to say about how we vote or worship. May I add, thank you mods and admin for this site and all you do to keep it clean.

Instead of wondering who/why closes threads, maybe we should be asking who/why opens threads of volatile subjects..............for what seems to be the sole purpose of igniting a fight.

Posting current issues and then discussing them, is always fun.

Posting a link and then a one line taunt, seems to me to primarily be the work of someone who doesn't want to dicsuss..........just vilify anyone with a different view.

Then again............I could be all wet.

This is a truck site and I agree with those who close down political and religion stuff that gets too hot. I see lots of posting misleading or mis-information. If you want to read or pass along false information or discuss relgion or politics there are lots of other places to go in the net.
My only other pet peev since people don't think about what they say, or rather what they post. The next time you make a post, and more specifically, a post to, or about an individual. Would you say what your are posting to that person's face if you were actually with them. I have a feeling there are many people here that would change there perspective if they were engaging a person face to face.
