Eugene Robinson, writing in the Washington Post, has a different theory for the decline of American Idle: A competing reality program, more emotionally compelling and even stupider, offering viewers "vivid characters with compelling life stories, frequent opportunities to judge the candidates' performance [and] do-or-die evenings when your favorite is in peril of being voted off the show" is drawing market share away.

And sadly, today very few have those qualities, on Idol and otherwise, music is manufactured these days. It is written, composed and performed by extraordinarily talented folks who never see the light of day in the media, it is produced in the most technological, expensive studios that one has ever seen. I guess what I am saying is that "they" can make anyone a star if "they" so choose. I got some sage words from a Nashville producer on a cruise a few years back, he said to me, "It's not about how well they write or sing, it's how they look in jeans, we can make anyone sound good with the production talent we have". I believe him. No wonder most live performances today are technologically enhanced, they can't do it on their own.

I completely agree after seeing all the young folks that supported the lady voted off. That said Cook has a couple of good CD's in him that will go platinum, the kid, I think he has peaked too soon, but will ultimately make a good career out of his talent.

Or is it just me? Good voice and all that but he just doesn't do it for me. Who wins.....I wanted a final with Carlie and David C. so what do I know? I will say don't underestimate the teenie-bopper vote.....look how long that no talent dreads guy hung in there!

I don't know about that.
That degree of sales takes a lot of different styles of people liking that particular song, and lots & lots of radio play. I am sure you can relate to the many "cards" that will have to be called in to get the radio stations to rotate a song. I don't see him even coming close to gold, even if Cowell invests millions in promotion.
Good lookin' women can pull it off because they are..well..good looking women. Who in they're right mind turns off a Carry Underwood video?
Cook is ugly as sin, and IMO, he's not vocally different from the next guy to seperate himself.
I love watching the competition, but American Idol incapsulates EVERYTHING that is wrong with POP and Country music today.
Yeah, David C and maybe a couple of others will make a CD that will be snatched up by the kids, but they have nothing more to offer than they're notoriety from the show.. Just someone who can sing someone elses song.
Unless thet have a dynomite song writing cousin in there pocket, or access to dynomite songs from outside writers, they will fade away, and fast.

I dunno George, Daughtry's CD is certified triple platinum and I think Cook is as talented. If he gets the right writers and he will, I believe he has it in him.

Hard rock, if ya like that sort of thing. I appreciated his talent while his music choice was not for me. Same for Carrie, a lot of talent but I'm not a Country/Western type BUT her voice is excellent and if I didn't mention it before, she fills out Western Jeans quite nicely!
