I'M LOOKING INTO A NEW CAR, BUT I CAN'T FIND AN AMERICAN MADE AUTO THAT GETS GOOD MILEAGE. I LOOKED AT THE FORD/MERCURY HYBRID, BUT BATTERY REPLACEMENT IS 5-6 k. SO WHY PAY 10 GRAND MORE FOR A HIBRID AND HAVE THE BATTERY COST STAIRING AT ME IN 8 YEARS? LOOKING SERIOUSLY AT THE VW JETTA TDI WAGON WHICH GETS ABOUT 40 MPG IN TOWN. SO WHY SHOULD I BUY ANYTHING ELSE?
PS I NEED SOMETHING TO PUT MY POWERED WHEEL CHAIR IN, SO A PRIUS WONT WORK

This program jives with the republican rhetoric of "tax breaks" and "tax incentives" to spur business and economic growth.
Tax incentives and breaks let me keep my money. This program takes my money to give someone who can afford to buy a car in this economy and then gives them $4500 to do that.
GM is laying off another 7500, so this isn't helping at all.

No it doesn't take your money.
It lets the people buying the cars avoid some Federal Income Tax.
So in essence, it lets them keep their money.
This program is what the Republican one-trick ponies have been doing for decades. Giving tax breaks and incentives under the claim that it helps the economy and lets people keep more of their money.
Fed Tax Break Encourages SUV Purchases
Tax Breaks Help Small Business Buy Big SUVs, But Help for Hybrids May Vanish
By AMANDA ONION

Thanks to a generous tax credit, Karl Wizinsky is driving a very large vehicle these days — a 2002 Ford Excursion.
"It doesn't hurt to have a larger vehicle, but I wouldn't say it's a requirement of my business," he said on a cell phone while driving the Excursion. "But I ended up saving $32,000."
This year, the perks of buying a large SUV — if you're a small business owner — got even bigger.
Congress recently passed a tax bill, as proposed in President Bush's economic stimulus plan, that offers a $100,000 tax credit for business owners who purchase any vehicle weighing 6,000 pounds or more when fully loaded.
When Wizinsky's accountant told him about the credit last year, the amount was much less, at $75,000, but it was enough to encourage Wizinsky to trade in his Mercury Marquis for the Excursion.
"It sounded too good to be true," said Wizinsky, a health care consultant in Novi, Mich. "But it was true. So I bought the SUV. For a small company like mine it's a significant credit." ...

- Hella headlights (highly recommended)
- DOT C-2 back end (also recommended)
- R-12 air conditioner converted to R-406a. Saved ozone and money
- 4.1:1 final drive converted to 3.4:1. Quieter, better mileage but it's a good thing I live in the flat Midwest.
- 9/22/2007, age 21: Still running well when reluctantly sent away for reincarnation, due to body & frame rust.
i build the ford focuses and we went from a 50 day supply down to
3 supply in 4 days so yep it is working. Now when the numbers come
out for the month you get will get a better perspective on sales. So if
you guys keep buying foreign cars keep buying them and see how many
more people keep losing there jobs. The ford focus is the number 1
selling cars for the cash for clunkers. They are also doing this to get
rid of those gas guzzlers off of our roads. You have to look at the broad
view of why they doing this, they are trying to get a less oil usage in
the usa. I am going to get overtime now because of the program.
Lets see if a car has 12mpg and they get a car at 35mpg gee i wonder
what that advantages are.
And finally, when you go into the government site to find if you car is on the clunker list you have just unknowingly given the government total and unending access to your computer, forever. You see, not only does the government get you into additional debt, tell you what to drive, how to spend what little money you have, it will also be able to monitor your every keystroke forever. Big Brother IS watching, Carl Marx is alive and well.
Don't look now, but there's a black helicopter hovering just across the street from your house.
But you're right about Carl Marx. He is attributed as saying "From each according to their abilities. To each according to their needs."

Whadda ya talking about? Whose money is it taking? How about every person who pays their taxes? If you delete your first sentence above and modify the last sentence to change "their" to "our" then it would be a lot closer to the mark.
The State up here has an energy rebate program that reimburses for improvements to homes that save energy. It's not free money though, you have to spend some to get some, and the rebate counts as federal income, so you get taxed on that, too. What you do get is the future benefit of having to buy less fuel to heat your home. Sounds fair to me.
What's the "cost" to those getting the clunker deals. They get (possibly) more than market trade-in value for their old car, and a reduced price on a new one.
No doubt that it's stimulating the economy, but is it just a flash in the pan? And at what cost to ALL of us?
now kl, dont be confusing his words---hes a leftist, and dont understand hard things--keep it REAL simple--

Tax Credits are the Republican Way. This jives with exactly what Republicans want most, a tax break to "stimulate" the economy. Are you denying they have running on this same, tired nag for the last 20 years?
This is exactly what they vouche for everytime they open their collective mouths and yet now they are shooting down their own philosophy of the last 20-30 years.
Why do you suppose that is?
And to the person who called me a leftist, why are your shoes on the wrong feet?
Not only is Beck's assertion completely false, it's amazing to me how many people would believe this guy who is just a tad bit.................out there.

No, it wasn't.
It never applied to the buyer...................just the dealer.
And it is being wrong on something as simple as this which leads me to the conclusion that Beck is either not too bright..............or............ intentionally deceiving.
