Even for those that are not fans of GM and their cars it is a sign of times upon us. By morning an American Icon may be no more. Millions of Americans stand awaiting their fate.
I often wonder if more people would spend their money more patriotic if we would still have a choice in the future. If not the freeways will be nothing but toyota hybrids and honda accords.
We saw a our first 2010 Camaro yesterday....WOW....it once again shows what is great about American engineering and ideals. You go to see a carshow full of nothing but the classics...FORD CHEVY DODGE. Is the prius going to be my kids future classic? Sickening thought. I know I will never outsource my hard earned money to the asian car makers but fewer and fewer share the same principle........
It is very hard these days, and people need to put faith back into the American industries. I for one am with you on buy American, but you are also correct on few other share this ideal.

Nissan and Toyota don't make heavy duty diesels like Ford and GM do. For me, it's not about buying American. It's about buying a truck that is made exactly the way I want it. Ford did it for me. Until I'm married, I wouldn't be caught dead buying a CAR. And when I do, you better believe that it'll be what gets the job done (news flash: none of the American automakers would make the cut).
Anywho: what few people realize is that bits and pieces of ANY vehicle are designed and/or manufactured all over the world. I don't know what Ford or GM's parts lists for any vehicle is, but I'll be willing to bet you that at least one part on any of their list isn't manufactured in the States.
Oh, and for the record... the two Nissan trucks in my signature are long gone. Gone gone gone (done moved on)!

While I am not a big GM fan, or Dodge for that matter, without good competition, even Ford will lose out. If you look at a Government owned GM and a FIAT (Fix it again, Tony) owned Crysler/Dodge, it won't take long for Ford to go down hill. It's a real sorry situation, and only if the Republican's can come up with another "Contract with America" like what happened in 1994, we, as a Nation, of capitalist, are sunk. We all better pray real hard.

Honda makes Accords in Marysville, Ohio in an assembly plant which opened in 1982. They actively sought out small local manufacturers, taught them the Kaizen philosophy and revitalized the manufacturing economy of northwestern Ohio into their supplier base, in the process probably creating the most-American-content vehicle currently in production. They've turned out a good product, employed thousands of people and paid good wages.
So 5% of the sticker price goes to Minato. Better that than 50% going down the toilet or off to Cerebus Capital Group's numbered bank accounts in Dubai.
Buy American
Support American Autoworkers' Jobs
Buy a Honda
p.s: I've never actually bought a Honda, American-made or otherwise. But I did buy a Mexican-made Plymouth Neon once. Go figure.

- R-12 air conditioner converted to R-406a. Saved ozone and money
- 4.1:1 final drive converted to 3.4:1. Quieter, better mileage but it's a good thing I live in the flat Midwest.

Yessir, and the late model 1/2 ton Toyota Tundras are made bumper to bumper in San Antonio and another city back east. Plus their Tundra V8 engines are made somewhere in Alabama. Seems to me someone said a certain model Ford is made in Mexico, so who knows, it's a global economy. If I recall correctly, Car & Driver has mentioned more than once that BMW has a factory back east too somewhere.
Honda, Toyota, Nissan in the states aren't saddled with labor and legacy costs either like GM, Ford, and Dodge. In the end, that is a ponzi scheme just like Madoff and Social Security. It is not sustainable.
These bankruptcies should have been done months ago as forced input from tax payers is a complete loss that will not be recovered.
