I sure hope it's worth the investment. What I get from the articles is that our $25 Billion investment will be returned to us as $0.5 Billion in fuel cost savings - IF we buy new cars.
The other $24.5 Billion ... ?

The model S is only $49,900 after the tax credit. When you consider what some members here are paying for a new truck, I guess it's not that bad. I know I won't be in line for one of them.
More in my price range. I have seen a few on the highway here. Probably no worse getting hit in that thing than my '96 Corolla.
Seems to me that bailouts/loans will be what defines the present administration

I'm betting a truck has a bigger payload capacity.
If you have only one friend or one family member, the Smart might be a decent option. There are other options that give similar economy with more capacity to carry a family for only a little more money. The Smart should be an $8,000 car.
Did any of these companies ask for these loans? Statements are that they have been "awarded" these loans. Are they taking the loans with the conditions that the government operatives have placed upon them?

No doubt the truck has a bigger payload. But the idea here as I see it is to make a commuter vehicle that the masses will drive daily. I will agree that the smart car is for all practicality a two seater, but here in the bay area, a vast majority of the drivers are solo, and with the highest average gas price in the nation, it might make sense. I did my part for the enviroment and fuel conservation last Nov. when I retired
As far as any of the makers "asking" for a loan...I don't know but I try to keep that opinion from being typed on these forums, seems like that's what gets these topics locked/closed..

Bay Area. Yeah, with the parking too. A bike is a better option, honestly.

I think it's an honest question.

Yes it is, but it seems like some one will ask an honest question and then all the rep/dem, conservative/liberal, greeny stuff takes over. I don't know like I said, but I am TIRED of our money being spent, without asking...... I know that I stop spending when my check book gets close to zero. Must be nice to pick up the phone and say "run the presses" (mint)

It's probably best to avoid using the terms "Left" and "Right" when referring to modern American politics. They don't really mean anything and it seems like they've been selected to cause people who actually agree on the issues to argue.
Case in point: On this item, both the Green Party(commonly referred to as the "Far Left" of American politics) and the Libertarian Party(commonly referred to as the "Far Right" of American politics)agree that the government should not be handing out corporate welfare like this, while the Democratic [sic] and Republican parties (commonly referred to as opposite sides of American politics) both agree that the government should appropriate public money this way.
So give credit where credit's due: The Democratic [sic] Party currently has unchallenged control of the federal agenda and they -- not some ambiguous "leftists" -- made this corporate giveaway happen.
(although the Republican Party does the same when they have control)
p.s: The website "greenparty dot org" is a spoof site. The actual Green Party Internet address is "http://gp.org/index.php" .

I do agree with your statement.
At the national level, most Democrats and Republicans bear little difference between each other. They spend others' money like they print it for them and they care very little for individual rights (McCain-Feingold Act, etc.). It's an ideology of progressivism from both sides that serves to built the political elite class through the development of crappy policy in growing welfare programs for the poor and the rich while developing animosity between everyone to continually sway elections from one to the other with very little concern for parties outside the current two.

I see that one of the Green Party's best and brightest is in a bit of a snag:
"State Department and White House officials have not effected our release or taken a strong public stance to condemn the illegal actions of the Israeli Navy of enforcing a blockade of humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians of Gaza, a blockade that has been condemned by President Obama."
LOL!

Why would Israel want "payback" for a contest which they won?
Maybe it's not personal, maybe they just don't want any outside observers reporting on what's the IDF's doing in Palestine & Gaza.
