FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - Al Gore is now a wintertime fixture in Fairbanks.
Well, make that an ice sculpture of the 2007 Nobel Prize winner and leader in the movement to draw attention to climate change and global warming.
Local businessman Craig Compeau unveiled the frozen likeness on Monday.
The 8 1/2-foot-tall, 5-ton sculpture dominates a downtown street corner from its perch on the back of a flatbed truck.
Compeau says he's a "moderate" critic of global warming theories. He used Monday's unveiling of the sculpture to invite Gore to Fairbanks -- where it was 22 degrees on Monday -- to explain his global warming theories.
He says it will stand through March, unless it melts before then.

well...i dont know....but they talked of the danger of the greenland ice cap breaking off and melting and raising sea level 2 meters and if what they see happening in antartica continues that there is the possiblity of sea levels raising 6 meters...18ft about. that will make another "atlantis" out of florida and of course n.y. city would be all but inhabitable....
The next time you have a few minutes , fill a glass to the very top (including surface tension) ..then drop in an ice cube or two.(some of the ice will be above the water level).dry the counter under it completely ,,& wait to see if any more water ends up on the counter ,after the ice melts ..

I don't know about you but I am all for Nuclear Power. There is a lot of land in the United States that can be irrigated and inhabitated if we go even further and use Nukes for desalinization.
I also like the idea of using waste heat from Nukes to cook coal into liquid fuels.
All these projects are feasible but we have wasted the last 8 years investing in debt.
yep--a lot of deserted service bases all across the usa----

If the ice is on water.........................true.
If the ice is on land..........................false.
Last I checked, the Greenland ice sheet is on........................... land.
If the ice is on water.........................true.
If the ice is on land..........................false.
Last I checked, the Greenland ice sheet is on........................... land.
ice in water is less dense when frozen.
A great experiment to do is take a glass or soup can and fill it to the top then freeze it!

OK ,,have we lost site of how much water exist's on the planet now ..the ice is a good bit of oxygen,,Snow & so on ..I keep saying this over & over ,,this is a big planet ..you don't have to be a scientist to grasp the concept ..
Remember the Kuait oil fires ,,we were warned of "nuclear winter "
anyone smell any smoke ??Scientist's were spewing the so called facts
OK , greenland is land , how does this fit into the polar ice caps picture .?
I don't have the % ,,But ,,I suspect the water won't rise 6 meters ...
My guess is it can be calculated mathematicaly
By the way ,who was behind the "world was going to come to an end in the year 2000"?...
Anyone notice anything other than the old VCR's didn't work ?....

You mean that's why my glass doesn't overflow when my ice cubes melt?

A better experiment would be to take a bowl, put a large object in the middle of it (like a soup can), fill the bowl with the can in it to the top with water.
Prior to this, take an empty soup can, fill it with water and freeze it.
Now, take the ice out of the soup can (warm the sides and dump it out) and place it on top of the soup can in the bowl.
That will almost exactly mirror the situation of the Greenland Ice Sheet.
Wanna bet the water in the bowl overflows?
Roofie, you're supposed to be an engineer. I can't even believe you're arguing this.

Correct, but your analogy is way out of proportion. Instead of using a CAN of frozen water, use a THIMBLE of frozen water.

"The math behind the assumption is straightforward."
"Nonetheless, these factors are relatively small. “The number is largely accepted,” Martin Truffer, a geophysicist at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, told me. Pennsylvania State geoscientist Richard B. Alley agreed: “I think almost everyone in the community would be comfortable with saying” seven meters, which is essentially 23 feet.
The controversy about 23 feet stems not from its accuracy, but how it has been used. Prof. Gregory’s Nature paper said that a temperature increase of eight degrees Celsius (14.4 degrees Fahrenheit) would be needed for most of the Greenland ice to melt in the next millennium. While Greenland melting has been increasing, most shorter-term forecasts for temperature increases and the resulting global sea-level rise — due to ice melting in Greenland and elsewhere — are less dire."

I live on the ocean....well the river leading to the ocean....so if I take a leak in the ocean technically there will be pee in the ocean but it will be slightly diluted. Also technically the ocean will rise some.

for AK/Rick in train terms. Back in the early 60's I used to for fun hop into a freight car (the D and H railroad) and go for a free ride up Richmondville hill going from Albany to Cobelskill. Now I'm sure my weight and that of me retarded friends added some load resistance to the 6 engines going up that hill. The train with us or without us always made it up the hill.....well slightly slower!!!!

Interestingly enough, no one is disputing the math (other than whether the ice sheet is actually as deep as calculated given that the top portion is snow...not ice).
Given that...................you'd have to piss an awful lot to make the analogy work.
On the other hand, if you were talking about doing #2...............
