How can I become a gain more skills for Diesel Mechanic?

Hi,
I'm new in here and I don't know anything about Diesel engines at all I was hoping maybe some out you guys can point me to the right direction. I was hoping to learn more about trucks/buses engines.
I mean I used to be part computer technician learning problems through reading stuff and actually with practical too. So I was hoping I can have the same step here because I think I really like servicing stuff especially big engines.

If you've got a little bit of spare cash and neighbors/landlords/significant other that won't get upset, then just dive in with a craigslist special. Don't get the prettiest, fanciest truck you can find. Just go with a cheap, mechanically sound one and use it to hone your skills. Then once you're comfortable that you know what you're doing, you can move forward on your dream truck.

I would think an older, mechanically-injected dodge cummins would be a good choice, since the parts are quite common and it will have the most in common with the engines in the big semi tractors.

Good luck, and welcome to TheDieselStop!

Good point, RD97. You could also get some old (non-electronic controlled) engine manuals, Cummins, Detroit, Ford 7.3/6.9 over Ebay. Most genuine factory manuals are really complete with lots of information.

I guess that is what I need to learn more about semis. Thanks a lot.

Regarding about RD97 point, I don't have that much money to buy a proper truck yet. Not at my age unemployed atm.

plus with him being in new zealand, it might be a little hard to find a truck over there with those engines in them.
my first thought was to find an older vw or mercades diesel and play with that first. this are cheap over here.

Thanks for the advice mate, I think I have do an entry level course before entering an apprenticeship here. I mean I can learn how to service trucks but that probably won't certify me as a Diesel Mechanic unless I've gone through proper apprenticeship. All I want is some extra materials for me to read while doing the course and apprenticeship.
