Is maintaining your trucks your hobby?

I've noticed from years of reading on here is seems like alot of guys/gals on here take their maintenance of their trucks seriously!

Not that its a bad thing...I just see it from a different side.

My trucks have been running non stop for years nearly 7 days a week. The trucks don't sit still long enough to even pop the hood.

I see alot of people on here doing oil changed at 3,500 miles!! Dosen't factory on 7.3 & 6.0 recommend 5K?? If I did a oil change every 3,500 miles I would be doing it every 3-4 weeks....thats to much for me Anyone else overwhelmed by the never ending maintenance?

Right now my trucks are lucky to get an oil change every 7,500 miles...which is usually a month and a half.

Within reason, I try to do as much of the "maintenance" as I can. Oil changes, transmission fluid changes, air/fuel filters, brakes, tire rotations, etc. When it comes to electronics, or having to lay across a hot engine to access a part, I'm willing to pay someone to do it for me However, so far I have only experienced minor issues and so far all were warranty items but one and that time my son had the truck out-of-town and had to pay for a job we could have done ourselves (CAC boots).

It sure isn't my hobby---I have a life. However, I keep it in A-1 shape so it doesn't interfer with hobbies and won't let me down when I use it (for hobbies).

I have reached a point in my life that if I want to maintain my truck or other car then I will do it if I want to. If not then the shop down the street will get my business. That is the nice thing about being retired. Most of the time you can do what you want when you want to do it.

For the 18 months that I owned my 2003 6.OHNO, it wasn't my hobby........it was my job.

Which seriously interfered with my real hobby of golfing.

It's not a hobby for me, I do routine maintenance (oil @ 2500) and the occasional required repair because I don't really trust shops to do the job correctly - plus I save on labor.
I've got 254K miles on the truck now.

Young enough to get under the hood and do maintainence myself.
Wise enough to know when to pay someone to do it for me.

I am forturante to have my mechanic right accross the street from my office. So when its time for oil changes (5000 miles), tire rotations, or repairs I can just walk over and hand him my keys. We get a fair amount of rain in Southeast Louisiana so his garage is far more suitable than my driveway in most cases.

It just seems every time I work on one of my other vehicles my truck just gets so jealous it has to break something too for the attention!

it's not my hobby. But now that i'm learning more and more about my diesel truck, it's becoming more and more enjoyable. I can't say it's a hobby. but it's in no way a task.
