Radiation treatment is going great, I'm up to 25.5 gray or sieverts almost 1/2 way!!!
My total dose will be 82 Gray or Sieverts.
While Devair Alves Ferreira received a large dose during the Goiânia accident of 7.0 Gy, he lived while his wife received a dose of 5.7 Gy and died. The most likely explanation is that his dose was fractionated into many smaller doses which were absorbed over a length of time, while his wife stayed in the house more and was subjected to continuous irradiation without a break, giving her body less time to repair some of the damage done by the radiation. In the same way, some of the people who worked in the basement of the wrecked Chernobyl plant received doses of 10 Gy, but in small fractions, so the acute effects were avoided.
But I'm at 25 GY heading for 82 GY, they died at less than 10 GY, so why am I alive?
Well here ya go.
Time or exposure and area of exposure is the key..
I'm on the Novalis machine that concentrates high dose radiation in a very small area.....and no place else!!!! Also the dose is over 2 month period.
In the case of a person who has had only part of their body irradiated then the treatment is easier, as the human body can tolerate very large exposures to the non-vital parts such as hands and feet, without having a global effect on the entire body. For instance, if the hands get a 100 Sv dose which results in the body receiving a dose (averaged over the entire body of 5 Sv) then the hands may be lost but radiation poisoning would not occur. The resulting injury would be described as localized radiation burn.
6–10 Sv (600–1,000 REM) Acute radiation poisoning, near 100% fatality after 14 days (LD 100/14). Survival depends on intense medical care. Bone marrow is nearly or completely destroyed, so a bone marrow transplant is required. Gastric and intestinal tissue are severely damaged. Symptoms start 15 to 30 minutes after irradiation and last for up to 2 days. Subsequently, there is a 5 to 10 day latent phase, after which the person dies of infection or internal bleeding. Recovery would take several years and probably would never be complete.
Devair Alves Ferreira received a dose of approximately 7.0 Sv (700 REM) during the Goiânia accident and survived, partially due to his fractionated exposure
I mentioned this before to all of you guys approaching 50.....get your PSA and prostate checked.
a PSA of 4 "used" to be safe but mine was only 1.5 but because I was getting checked every 6 months the Doctor noticed a jump from 1.5 PSA to 2.5 PSA which gave him questions? Now here is where it gets odd, had I never ever gone in until I was 58, I would have been under the PSA of 4 bench mark and been sent home with a A-OK report.
Because of this they discovered a tumor less then .177 which had ZERO feel, zero side effects and in fact the doctor said I could have waited 5-10 years with no symptoms. Because it was discovered so early it was a perfect choice for the Novalis machine. There are truly no side effects including....well you know!!!
GET CHECKED!!!!

Best wishes to you in your treatment and thank you for sharing the details of how easy it is to get overlooked.
While we're discussing getting checked, guys, if you've lived on burgers and red meat for 35+ years and you're 45+ years old, schedule a colonoscopy. They are painless, you won't remember it, and they can save your life. As a kid I watched my grandfather and more recently, a 49 year old friend both die of colon cancer and that plus my diet was why I got checked. 3 polyps. 3 years later 2 more. 2 years after that- I've got NONE. So I'm off the hook for testing for 5 years. I'm with Roof on this stuff. Guys- please, get checked.

I"m sure this treatment will be successful and that way if you want to be a flaming azzhole in the future....................it can come naturally.
With "photon" radiation, but I'm sure you know that already.

Makes my occupational dose look paltry by comparison.

Makes my occupational dose look paltry by comparison.
Was the max max when I was at Electric Boat, but more like 170 "MR" per quarter.
Keep in mind that was "total body" absorption....mine in concentrated (so they claim) to a specific area the size of a grape. Photon radiation in a very small area over a 2 month period is not like a 10 second burst over the entire body of "5" gray which is the LD-50 dose!

Wow, I don't know what to say. You are in my prayers. I am 56 and get checked regularly. I lost a close friend of 23 years to CC because he though he just had a hemmoriod. It ate at him for a year after he was diagnosed before it finally took him. Broke my heart to see him go like that. Tom was a good egg with a big heart. He went through radiation and chemo and it went into remission. Six months later it was back with a vengence and had spread all through him.

All of us that are getting up there should get checked. I have a good friend on this forum approaching 50 real soon that refuses to get checked? Generally a very smart guy and for the life of me I can't fathom his reasoning not to get checked when it's so easy and cheap!

Personally, I'd rather see men wear proof of check up like a lapel pin than have them secretly freaked out leading to major problems and slow, painful death from something that's totally curable in early stages. Geeze, if it's OK for women to get checked annually from age 18 on, surely men should have the courage and support of other men to get their lower units check starting at 45 or 50. Really guys, it's NOT the ordeal you think it is to get tested. PSA test is a BLOOD TEST- the only thing you have to bare is an ARM. For those that don't know, ALL elderly men have prostate cancer- the test is to make sure the rest of your immune system has it under control.
Colonoscopies are NORMALLY done with amnesia drugs. You remember everything right up onto the table immediately followed by someone saying, "Ok, you're all done." Even the prep work the day before is not the horrible ordeal it once was if they give you the right "crankcase flush" prescription.
Just get it done and be proud of yourselves for setting an example for other men- especially your offspring. Nobody wants to watch you die from any of those diseases...and if they do, get checked so you can give them more reasons to hate you.

well guys in 6 more days roofeditor will graduate from "cancer" school. After 3 months of radiation totaling 85 gray, I'm supposedly cured.
The effects of radiation.....modern day radiation compared to that of even 3 years ago have been very very minimal as far as I can tell.
I'm lucky that I got checked starting at 47-48 and had tracked my PSA which was still in the safe zone but more important had risen.
I'm also lucky that Melbourne Fl has one of 4 Novalis TX machines with the GPS tracking device.
Three years ago they had trouble hitting consistently a target the size of a golf ball. Today with the Novalis they claim they can hit sub-millimeter targets 200 times without missing.
This
A. Allows greater radiation levels because they are not hitting the good important things.
B. Near zero side effects.
C. 100 times greater cure rate.
D. No sexual dysfunction reported. (don't laugh)
The key to all of you is get checked EARLY and OFTEN and do your homework and ask a lot of questions!!!

It was a shock to me to find this message thread today, given my absence on this board of late. My prayers are with you. Best of luck with your recovery!!
