Texas: an example of good government

Not perfect, but not bad, and certainly better than most.

Texas has a relatively weak state government.

No state income tax.

The executive powers of the governor are split between him/her and the lieutenant governor.

The state legislature convenes only once every two years and is constitutionally forbidden to meet for more than 140 days.

From Texas governor Rick Perry:

Quote:
There are certain truths that have to be agreed to. One is that economies grow when they are free from over-taxation, over-regulation, over-litigation, and they have a skilled work force. Government isn't difficult in theory - don't spend all the money, keep taxes low, have a fair and predictable regulator climate, keep frivolous lawsuits to a minimum, and fund an accountable education system so that you have a skilled work force available. Then get the hell out of the way and let the private sector do what the private sector does best. It's simple in theory, but it's difficult to accomplish. In Texas, we've implemented that theory, and it's produced an economy that has no match in America.
So is Gov Perry just blowing smoke? It doesn't seem so:

Texas is home to the nation's highest volume port,

the largest medical center in the world and

the headquarters of more Fortune 500 companies than any other state, having surpassed New York in 2008.

Texas created more jobs in 2008 than the other 49 states combined.

(I read in a second source that the actual numbers are that 70% of the jobs created in the US in 2008 were in Texas)

Texas will end this budget year with a $9 Billion dollar surplus.

Contrast this to the bottom line for <insert your favorite big government state here>.

So while California (and others) are figuring out how to pay their bills with worthless IOU's and/or asking for federal bailouts, the freedom loving Texans are taking good care of their affairs.

Unfortunately, the secret is out. I heard on the radio that over a thousand people are moving to Texas every day. Renting a U-haul truck to move from California to Texas (one way) will set you back $3,000. Renting the same U-haul to move from Texas to California will only cost $900 because they've got a backlog of trucks stuck in Texas and they are happy to find somebody willing to drive them to other states!

As pathetic as California's budget deficit of $26 Billion is, the US government has chosen to follow their lead. The US budget deficit will be 70X the hapless state of California.

Yes, let's learn our lesson by following the worst example possible.

I don't always agree with Perry, but I have to admit, he certainly got everyones attentention not too long ago when the word 'secession' slipped out. I think he's doing a good job of making sure that we don't slip into the 'gimme' rut that certain other states have fallen into. I look at my daughter and s-i-l, living in KC, Kansas, having to pay state income tax as well as ad valorem taxes on their vehicles (on top of the vehicle registration fees), and I wonder why anyone would want to leave our state. And, while my son and d-i-l love what California has for them around the San Francisco area (mountain climbing, beaches, snow skiing), I think they've succumbed to sticker shock on how much it is costing to live out there. just my .02 cents worth

We don't really realize how good we have it in Texas unless we leave and live elsewhere. One of my biggest mistakes in life was moving up to Ohio. Talk about an ineptly run state! Every day I keep trying to find a job back home in Texas so I can get out of this mess they have here.

Since I was born in San Antonio, I think it is legitimate for me to also point out that not even the second largest state is perfect.

LOL

So what's the lesson here?

Why outsource to third-world countries when you can reap the same benefits by setting up shop in Texas?

+1

Are we currently united?

It doesn't seem so.

What can we unite around?

Human nature , funny thing....a mix of love and hate.....we can have good and bad in one very complex body.

Our minds are all unique, so to unite it would take common ground, ideas that are similar and for the good of BOTH parties.

That is the hardest part, we already had a big smear with the civil war.

To unite around common need of the PEOPLE, and not a political agenda, that is the key, and that is worth uniting for.

Let's just keep God in all of this, and NOT just use His name in vain in monetary paper or metal or beautiful inspiring words in a song.

Well said.

It does seem to get a little old however listening to citizens of the second largest state who seem to tout themselves as better than citizens of all the other states. I personally think every single state in our country has a lot of things that are unique and wonderful.
Being proud of where you live is great but..............let's not forget that we ARE supposed to be the United States of America.
