various - auto industry

I've been away a while and noticed that for the most part, the threads on this board that I had followed have all been closed.

I had planned to offer a couple questions and/or comments:

1) I had wondered if the CAFE standards were looking at city, highway, the average of the two, or some other measurement. I did a quick Google and found a source that states that the CAFE mileage is the average of the city and the highway. I'm still wondering what will happen with 3/4 and 1 ton pickups in 2011 RE the CAFE requirements.

2) It will be interesting to see what happens with Indiana's lawsuit against the federal government for stiffing the Chrysler bondholders. EXCLUSIVE Interview With Richard Mourdock - HUMAN EVENTS

Observation: Won't the above hurt future investment in stocks and bonds? Seems to me that we would want our government to do things to encourage investment in US companies.

Instead, our president smears the bondholders as "unpatriotic" and "greedy speculators" and without due process, transfers their wealth to the government and UAW. A byproduct of discouraging private investment in companies is that it will be harder for companies to obtain capital, perhaps making it more likely they will fail, setting the stage for more government takeovers.

The current ruling (finalized March, 2006) is that as of MY2011, most vehicles up to 10k GVW will be included in Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) calculations. Currently, only vehicles up to 8,500 GVW are included.

This does not mean that individual 3/4-ton and 1-ton trucks will be required to meet a fuel economy standard. CAFE applies to the fleet average, not individual vehicles. A manufacturer is free to build low-mileage vehicles and still comply with CAFE by selling higher-mileage vehicles to restore the fleet average. Further, unlike emission standards which are mandatory, a manufacturer also has the freedom to build a fleet of vehicles which doesn't comply with the CAFE standard and pay a fine of $5.50 per vehicle per 0.1 mi/gal. Most of the luxury marques do precisely that.
"CAFE Fines No Deterent To Some Luxury Brands" Green Car Advisor

It does mean that 3/4-ton and 1-ton trucks will finally be tested for fuel economy and presumably, the results published on the window sticker and in the EPA/DOE Fuel Economy Guide, same as passenger cars and 1/2-ton trucks.

Well, I would agree that we would want our government to do something for business. But if you caught the news from the Newsweek editor who said that Obama was above the world, in fact he is like a god, we might think differently.
Personally I believe this administration wants complete state control over everything and they are working overtime to achieve this. They control the money/banks, they control a major portion of U.S. manufacturing (automobiles), they control the means of power (no oil or gas), they control the means to tax us out of existence, and last but not least they are controlling the spoken word.
Maybe our government is no longer our government?

I think this administration is simply trying to bail water out of a ship that has been sinking for the last 8 years.

When exactly does Bush's economy oficially becomes obamas'? You can only beat that dead horse so much. If you want to look at the job losses since he took office, its mind numbing and still climbing.
http://media.journalinteractive.com/...bsG_060609.jpg

He has proposed to spend more in the first 100 days of his presidency than...every president., plus here in my state several towns are getting this "stimulus" money for projects that dont make any sence. Why should my tax dollars put up new streetlights in a town i will NEVER travel through or even see for that matter? That creates ZERO jobs just one more short job for city employees that already have employment. Thats just wasteful spending to me, and that is just the tip of the iceberg

One other ting a little off the topic, this administration signing off to giving Iran the right to develop nuclear "energy"...that is the scariest idea conceivable, along with letting N.Korea test there missles. Show some backbone its been proven that writing strong letters and sanctions do nothing other than opress the already opressed country even more.

Theres my input, and yes my wallet will catch on fire next april

The philosophy of Acorn was to bring down government by overloading the system. Obama defended Acorn.

Obama is bringing down the government by overloading the system. Likewise he hates capitalism and is also destroying it.

And how long does it take to slow down and turn around a tanker going full bore?

In other words, momentum from our previous problems are still affecting us.

Although we'll never know for sure but, I'm convinced that things would be a lot worse right now if Bush was still in charge.

This train started when people were loaned money for things they never intended to afford.

To me, you need to stop the bleeding first not just throw money at the problem, which...he has done and wants to do more.

Pretty much 50cents of every dollar that is being spend is borrowed money, if a country like China wants to cash in we are all screwed.

Im seeing my markets in the ag market taking a dive solely because the DE-value of the dollar.

You havent seen NOTHING until he gets his health care plan passed, then the govt has the right to regulate your own personal lives on the grounds that the federal govt knows better than the citizens. Just the other day the detroit free press reported that Chrysler shareholders had agreed to terms with the UAW and suppliers to either postpone or possibly save Chrysler and the many dealerships and families lives that were ruined. The feds said no, proceed with bankruptcy and sale to Fiat

Bush?

How about FDR or Wilson and Teddy Roosevelt? More and more and more and more government added into the program with results that show for it. BHO has the thing WFO over what most people ever expected. Should be very good for the short term for those that have little to contribute or have no jobs.

Couldn't agree more, Powerdome. Obama's lackys are giving the Buffalo Bill Historical Center 1.2 million and that whole outfit is run by mega-millionaires from back east. My son says 40 million is going for a riverbank restoration in his area. The river sees a trickle of water a few weeks a year.
On top of that, according to a MT newspaper site, local construction companies are shafted because the government is using a controversial contracting method that speeds bidding but also tilts the playing field in favor of mega-companies. It's called IDIQ contracting, which is shorthand for "indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity," and it's essentially an all-you-can-eat money buffet for big corporations. The article goes on to say the "mega company" they refer to got caught in a corruption scandal in Iraq that cost us millions but they're still greasing the right palms (current administration).

Yea right, it's obviously Bush's fault------still.

This does not mean that individual 3/4-ton and 1-ton trucks will be required to meet the CAFE mileage standard. CAFE applies to the fleet average, not individual vehicles. Even so, a manufacturer may opt to not meet the CAFE standard by paying a fine of $5.50 per vehicle per 0.1 mi/gal.
It further punishes the manufacturing, sales, and purchasing of vehicles that individuals and companies may either want or need for their use in pleasure or work.

It punishes a profitable portion of an actual American business that supports American workers (manufacturers of the product, those that use them to work, those that work on them, etc.).

SUV's had a huge increase in their prices over other vehicles over the years because of previous CAFE regulations. This will further increase the cost and decrease the viability and opportunity of small businesses that rely upon light trucks for their start ups or continuation of business needs.

I guess they should all be buying old International 4700's and 4900's for pick up trucks...

+1

And the government wants to regulate salaries and how much credit card companies charge for interest? And the government continues to spend like a drunken whore in a meth lab with somone else's open credit line. It's not right.

Um, wrong. First, that's not how business works: Neither the sticker price nor the actual selling price has any direct relationship to the cost of production, just as the actual selling price doesn't have any direct (or even constant) relationship to the sticker price. Sport-futility vehicles had huge price increases because the market was stiff. Second, it doesn't cost anything to comply with CAFE regulations.

No.

CAFE mandates some kind of MPG standard that is pulled out of the air. And it actually limits what a manufacturer can produce. If it is unable to produce what is demanded, then the price goes up. Additionally, if these standards are to be met, then efforts have to go into attempting to meet them even when buyers are not demanding that kind of product to be produced.

Even you stated...
