1989 F600 specifications/help

Hello. I just bought a 1989 F600 with a straight six turbo diesel (6.6l Ford??). The truck has what appears to be air brakes, but I'm thinking it might be the odd hydraulic brakes I just read about; What came on this model? It has A/C, all glass is good along with the interior, 5 speed with 2 speed rear end and a great 14' steel flat bed. The tires are 60%+ with chrome simulators. Cosmetically it looks great except the front right fender is cracked, but easily fixed. It runs and drives super. The GVW says 20,200lbs. In reality, what can this truck haul and tow without getting in trouble with DOT? This is my first "medium duty" truck so I appreciate any information or advice. By the way, guess what I paid for it...

Most likely a Cummins engine built for Ford, should have a tag on one edge of the front cover that has some information on it and will probably have a Cummins logo there as well.

Air brakes - see if you have a red button on the dash for parking brakes. If you set the brakes (pull the button out) after having it running and you hear PPPSPSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! it is an air brake system.

In 89 it was probably a 6.6 FTO Ford (160, 170 or 185hp) engine. Not real powerful but pretty tough. Your brake system is called hydromax. It is ran by a pump that resembles a GM power steering pump.

Wait a minute there. Does the truck have what looks like an air brake parking knob? If it does, that truck has Lucas Girling hydraulic brakes.

I'm pretty sure it has Lucas Girling. I'll bring the truck home Thursday or Friday and find out for sure. The truck itself has little wear and has never towed so I'm hoping everything lasts for a while.

SD335 , to find out what you can haul legally , just stop by your nearest quarry and pull up on the scales . Whatever the truck weighs just subtract that from your GVW . I have an 89 F-700 model 922 with a 10' dump body .Mine has the same 6.6L set up at 170HP. This is a ford motor that was built in Brazil . I have air brakes , pretty easy to tell just hit the pedal and you can hear them , you will also have an air pressure gauge on the dash. Bought this truck new and I'm the only driver . Never let me down .28,000 GVW , truck weighs 13,000, legall load is 7.5tons . Don't know what you paid but I hope it was alot as I may be selling mine as business has me in a bad way. This has been the best truck , never cost me a dime other than 1 clutch, 1 set of brakes , 126,000 miles on it so far. Good luck with yours !

brlcon1, thanks for the reply. Mine has the Lucas-Girling brakes that everybody hates. They work great right now and as little as I use the truck they should last me a long time. So far I am very happy with the truck itself.

Before I bought the truck I got a quote for building a simple 8' flat bed for my F350 for $2200, laughed, then went and bought the F600 with a 14' flatbed for $1200.

I weighed the truck the other day at a CAT scale with my big hind end in there it weighed 10,100lbs.
