engine choice

i have been looking to buy a 650 for towing my various trailers around my little one ton just doesnt do it for me anymore they have gotten to big...i have driven an 04 with a 6.0 in it i have driven an 05 with a c7 in it and i drove an 08 with a 6.7 in it the cats numbers looked nice power wise but when i drove it there was just something that didnt seem right it seemed like it loaded up along with the 6.0 is that normal on them or did i just get two bad ones? the cummins ran like a champ but i want pre emmisions and i am not to sold on that engine yet! any suggestions?
