F650 pickup

Hi, I am considering picking up a F650 pickup for pulling my boat and cannot find a whole lot of info on these trucks. Who would you recommend to do the pickup bed conversion? Also could not find a whole lot on the 3 front bumper options, 4 single muffler/tailpipe options or the 12 different fuel tank option combinations.

What options should I consider with regards to fuel tanks, brakes, gear ratio and suspension? Cummins or Cat? Any other info would also be greatly appreciated.

F650 pickup

Have you considered the new Ford F-450? It has a towing capacity of 24,500LB and might be cheeper than getting a 650 with a bed conversion etc.

When I was researching this very thing, I ran into a company over there in Texas making what they called the Cowboy Cadillac. You might find him in the truck trader.

I chose the F450 because of the price. This may not be a concern for you.
I too would have prefered the Alison with a Cat motor, if thats what you were considering, but a friend of mine said his brother hates his 650 and cant get out from underneath it now. That along with price and drivability was enough for me.

BTW, I'm towing in the neighorhood of 26,000 to 29,000 lbs GCW, thats truck & boat wet. The 3000lb difference is dependant on how wet the boat is, fuel, water & supplies.

Mountain Master in AZ does a good job. They will add either a pickup bed or a hauler body to an F-650. Maybe have your new truck drop-shipped to Mountain Master, then you pick it up from them after it's ready to haul. Mountain Master Truck Equipment

I'm a fan of Accubuilt. Their Tuscany division in Elkhart IN does a good job on an F-650 hauler. If your boat is big enough to require an F-650 tow vehicle, then you'll have a gooseneck boat trailer and need a hauler body to tow it with. Tuscany Custom Trucks

But since you're in Austin, maybe check with Western Hauler in Fort Worth. I know they do F-550s, and they do the International equivalent to the F-650, so I suspect they'll do F-650s too - provided you want a Western Hauler-type hauler body instead of a pickup bed. Of course, if you just gotta have a pickup and not a hauler, then check with Supertruck

Those are the kinds of things you must decide with your body builder/upfitter. The upfitter will have set specs for some of those items, and maybe for others. For example, the fuel tanks that are required with a pickup bed will be different than those required with a stake body. But just for grins here are some of the different fuel tank combos available:

Fuel Tanks

Tank - Steel (Shallow) 45 U.S. gal. (170 L.) - Single STD
Tank - Steel (Deep) 50 U.S. gal. (189 L.) - Single -
Tank - Steel (Deep) 65 U.S. gal. (246 L.) - Single
Tank - Steel (Shallow) 65 U.S. gal. (246 L.) - Single
Tank - Steel (Deep) 80 U.S. gal. (302 L.) - Single

Tank - Steel (Shallow) 45 U.S. gal. Dual - Total Capacity 90 U.S. gal. (340 L.)
Tank - Steel (Deep) 50 U.S. gal. Dual - Total Capacity 100 U.S. gal. (378 L.)
Tank - Steel (Shallow) 65 U.S. gal./45 U.S. gal. Combination - Total Capacity 110 U.S. gal. (416 L.)
Tank - Steel (Deep) 65 U.S. gal. Dual - Total Capacity 130 U.S. gal. (492 L.)
Tank - Steel (Deep) 80 U.S. gal./65 U.S. gal. Combination - Total Capacity 145 U.S. gal. (549 L)

If you go for air brakes, then you will have to have a CDL to drive the truck. Will all your drivers have a CDL? If not, then don't pay the several thousand dollars for air brakes/suspension/etc.

Cummins or Cat?
If you don't know, then let your wallet decide. Realize that the 300-horse CAT with matching Allison tranny will cost you about $10,000 more than the standard Cummins and Allison automatic tranny. Yep, it's a really fine powertrain, but is it worth $10,000 to you?

The Cummins or CAT question has already been decided for you by Ford. Ford issued a stop build on CAT C7's this past Friday due to exhaust regen issues leading to excessive downtime. For the time being Cummins is your only choice unless you can find one on the lot...

Here are links to a couple of companies that make these conversions.

I would go with the cummins because of better reliability than the cat.

Give me a call if you'd like to discuss this further. I have chassis' setting here in stock that will accomodate a pickup bed. We have sold SEVERAL F650 pickups over the years. The chassis' I have setting here are loaded up to the max and have the CAT C7 300/860 setup.

Here's a couple pictures of one's we've done:

Price-Gnade Ford (Moscow Mills, Missouri) has a finished black one sitting on their lot as we speak. It's been sitting there all summer, probably get a good deal on it just to get it off their lot. I've seen a few go through them over the last year or so. They sold one to a doctor from Washington state last summer, so he could haul around his boat. Give them a call. 636-356-9000 Ask for Andy Kehoe.
