lift law in MA?

Well I tried to post in a cop forum but they scrub the posts to weed out the spam. Takes a while to have it posted. Anyway I was wondering if anyone knew the law for max allowable lift. Or know someone to talk to before I get mine. oh yeah this is Massachusetts so the laws suck.

My question is…

I want a 6” lift. Per calculation my max mechanical lift is 4.4”. therefore my max tire size increase is also 4.4”. so that makes a total lift of 8.8” right? If you look at (2) does this mean I could have a 6”mechanical lift with a 2” tire to be at 8”? or is it strictly 4.4"

Well here is the law….

(1) The maximum mechanical lift for four wheel drive motor vehicles
shall be calculated by multiplying the wheel base times the wheel track,
and dividing the product by a safety factor of 2200
The outside diameter of the largest tire size available from the original manufacturer as standard or optional equipment for the particular motor vehicle may also be increased up to an amount equal to the maximum mechanical lift calculated.
(2) The maximum combined mechanical and tire lift shall be no greater
than the sum of the maximum mechanical lift and increased tire size
calculated for the particular vehicle.

the reason i ask is not because of cops bugging me but more to make sure i can get an inspection sticker after spending 3g's on a lift.

Thanks in advance.

I wish I could point you in a specific direction for this but I can't. I would try calling a lift shop in your area or even a dealership that has a good aftermarket parts department. Hopefully others here will chime in and help you more than I can. I would imagine there are other guys here are are in the same situation.

Good luck. When you do figure out what size you are going to do with let us know. We would be happy to get you set up with a deal.

ma lift law

You got the formula right but I believe that the 4.4 includes lift plus tires, making it a total of 4.4. I had a 4" kit on a regular cab with 285 75 16 (32 11.50 16) tires and had a hard time getting a sticker this year with the new inspection program. I just put a 5" kit and 35" tires on my new ext cab 6' bed. Hopefully I wont have any problems next year but F it Ma lift laws suck. It depends where you go, my friend has a reg cab with 8" lift and 37" tires never has a problem getting a sticker. I think stations in metro west are hard compared to western mass or even worcester county.

In PA you can't lift it more then 2 inches and can't have tires more than 2 sizes over stock. I'm liking Cali more and more, no lift laws, just pass your smog, nothing else matters.

Where in MA are you?

The law is this: wheelbase x wheeltrack divided by 2200.

This give you the maximum amount of mechanical lift, and the maximum amount of inches over the O.E.M. Tire size. If the OEM tire was available in different sizes, select the largest diameter one.

If you do the formula and get 4.4, round down to 4. You can lift the vehicle 4"s and go 4"s over the current tire size. Giving you a total lift of 6"s, because a 4" increase in tire size is only a 2" increase in tire radius.

I drive around with an 8" an 38"s and have never been pulled over for it. I also had one lifted 7"s on 37"s with no problems.....6" lift on 37"s would be no problem.
