Check the 'barn doors'. That switch likes to act like the doors aren't closed tight. Many times the doors aren't closed tight enough. That is the problem I usually have that causes this.
Hope it's that simple.

The X has 6 door ajar switches, and they're all integral with the latch mechanisms inside the doors. One switch in each of the side doors, and two switches in the rear liftgate (one each side). There are no switches in the barn doors (there are no wires routed to those doors).

Many have reported good luck resolving the problem by spraying copious amounts (floods) of WD40 inside and onto the switches. I tried that on my '01, and the problem resurfaced a few weeks later. I eventually replaced all six switches on my '01 with later model switches. Later model switches are packaged in plastic bags while the earlier are packaged in small boxes.

FWIW, my '05 X has not (yet?) exhibited the dreaded door ajar syndrome.

I had the same problem with my X 2001 psd

I kept having to clean and spray the door ajar switches. It would usually work for a while. The real solution for me was..............

Replaced the rear door lifting struts. Apparently when then got weak, which they were, it made a difference. After installing the new lifting struts I have not had a "door ajar" light since. More than 1 year and running.

If the barn doors aren't closed tight it won't allow the lift gate to close all the way.
Guess that is what I was getting at...

I bought a door ajar switch for my 99 F350. Dumb question, where the heck does it go? I looked all over the door for a little plunger switch.
