We are finally going to do something about the regular bottoming out of the bumpers on our front axle. I would like to hear the pros and cons of putting the 'X' or other springs on the Excursion. Those of you that have made changes please comment both ways. Why not use the shocks from the 350 along with the spring changes instead of after market.
Other than the jostling around loose ride, the truck has pretty well performed its mission. I get about 12-13 very much stop and go and about 17.5-18 on the road at about 70+-. 14,000 miles.
Thanks for your advice.

Hi Cappy-
This topic has been extensively covered in this forum and if you search under "550 springs" or other key words you'll come up with the info. That being said I've done various mods to my X (see sig) and have created a straight tracking, sure handling, solid riding, hard cornering monster. I use this as a commuter vehicle and tow regularly and can tell you the mods are absolutely necessary to achieve the potential the X has from the factory. The 550 X code springs and the air ride rear bags (if you do any towing) are the key to safety and Nirvana.
Hope this helps and feel free to fire the questions either here or by E.
Rich

I'm daring to be different and am going to change to the W code spring. I'll let you know how it goes.

Done with the swap! Not a job for the faint of heart!

'01 X Limited 4x4, V10, Dark Satin Green
T code front springs, '03 bumpstops, Monroe Reflex shocks, Pro Comp steering stabilizer, Helwig Antisway front & rear, Am Racing AR-23 16x8 whls, BFG 285's, Seats 12 (front center seat plus Little Passenger's rear-facing 4th row seat), Infinity burlwood dash and trim, tinted front windows, longer 4x2 hatch struts, '92-'94 Econoline taillights (not operational), J&J chrome grill (vert), chrome tow hooks, tan cladding painted to match body, all tan plastic bumper pieces and homoramps replaced with XLT black versions...
Raised front almost 2". Now the front is 1" higher than the back. I haven't driven it very much yet. I did notice that going into the drive of the local grocery the front didn't bounce like a basketball like it did before. I will be testing it better tues night, 140 miles of winding, hilly, rough road. I also go down a big dip on wed night. From what little I drove it yesterday my impression is as follows; orininally the front was too soft and mushy and bounced on large bumps the rear seemed adequate, now the rear seems too soft and mushy and the front seems good. I'll know better tomorrow.

X-cuses, did you get my email? Worm, I assume the W spring is one notch down from the X spring? Let us know how the trip went.
Anyone do the swap and wish they had not?
When I make the spring swap I am going to replace the tires with 255/85 Goodyears. too bad they don't make 255s in the HO tread.

Yes the W is rated at 5600lb and the X at 600lb. I really cannot compare the two since I've only installed the W's. Tracking is greatly improved I can actually drive with my arms leaning on the stearing wheel. Cornering is also greatly improved and the understear almost gone. Front suspension travel is great, I went through the big dip at about 30mph and didn't bottom out. The shocks are still inadequate and next on the list. I was able to drive securely at 70mph on the winding road that I normally would have slowed to 55mph, the tires protested somewhat. Well worth the trouble!

Side note. Reno Husker has a 4" procomp lift on his and swears by it. The little woman had a fit when I mentioned a lift on the x, she doesn't notice the 2" up front. She would have noticed 4" so I compromised. I would have liked the lift but didn't want to spend the money.

Now that I have kids, I try not to swear anymore
But I really like the 3.5" of extra down travel I got from the lift kit. I have a glorious 4.5" of compression travel now. I just put on some Rancho 9000 shocks, set them to position 3, and it feels like I could drive thru anything at 45mph and still not bottom out
The shocks that came with my lift kit are up for grabs. If anybody wants them, you can have them.
