4X4 MPG vs 4X2 MPG - Diesel Forum

I will be buying an Excursion after the first of the year and I am wondering what difference there is in MPG on the 4X4 vs the 4X2. I would appreciate your stock truck MPG highway numbers for comparison.

I get 13 (winter) to 16 (rest of the year) MPG around town, and 18-20MPG on the road, hauling lots of stuff inside, but not generally towing anything huge or heavy. That's a 2000 4x4 XLT.

I'm sure it cost something to run the 4x4's extra weight and transfer case but I don't think very much. If you have need for the 4x4, buy it. In Michigan it is a good investment. Money spent will always come back and when a person needs 4x4 up here, you don't even think about the difference in mileage. 17-18 in the summer. Have gotton as high as 19.3 but that was driving 55-60

Another thing to think about

Cost of 4x4 is about 2200 on a new one

Cost of 4x4 on a 2000 is about 1800 or more, if you were furher north the cost of the 4x4 is almost always returned just like buying the PSD, you will likely get your money back.
