Re: 4x4 vs. 2WD Ex

I really doubt I would choose to go down an extremely steep boat ramp or into a swamp to camp so 2WD is probably just fine...not to mention, the ride is sooo much better.

I really hate decisions.

How do you know how steep/slimy the boat ramp is going to be before you get to a lake you haven't been to before? "Oh whoops, too steep. Not gonna back down that. Sorry everyone, we'll just have to go home now."

I agree that for "commuting" in snow, tires make a big difference. I just don't see the huge difference in maintenance, I've owned several 4x4's over the years, and one 2wd truck (multiple fwd cars). I commuted in the 2wd truck in Utah's winters. Empty bed and good tires, never a problem. Only "needed" 4x4 one time, backing up a hill behind the cabin. Had to take multiple runs at it. Needed the gears more often than that, towing a trailer up a dirt road with a camper in the back.

However, in my other trucks and burbs, I've used 4x4 on many occasions (that I wasn't specifically 4-wheeling) for traction and gearing, especially while towing. On one occasion I was hauling carpet up to the cabin in the fall and a freak snowstorm moved in. I spent 3 hours pulling out others in 2wd rigs and 4x4 rigs and RV's that refused to air down. Lots more experiences like that...I'm guessing had I been in the old 2wd I'd have had to turn around (or hike out).

The best riding and handling X I've driven had 4-6" of lift and 35" tires. Rode and handled very nice, even on the curves in Parley's canyon (I-80 east of SLC).

Unlock the hubs if you want 2wd. Just kidding. If you don't need it, you don't need it. Just depends on what you want your rig for. 4x4 is a very big part of what I want mine for, but I know that others will never ever use it.

We get snow/ice maybe once per year and I never plan taking the Ex off road; however, would hate to end up on a soft muddy road with that heavy diesel.

Re: 4x4 vs. 2WD Ex

I lived in Florida for 14 years. Spent alot of time around boats and ramps. For what it is worth, here is my $0.01 worth (not worth 2, I know). Most ramps are paved and because of the angle and weight distribution, most of the guys agreed that the front drive axle had very little input. We put and pulled my buddies 25ft cruiser in and out with his 2WD motorhome all the time. Good luck with flipping the coi....huh, making your decision.
