5" Exhaust Systems

I have an 01 "X" with 7.3 PSD thinking about changing the exhaust system to 5".
What results can I expect?

MPG Increase?
Cooler EGT?

My goal is to drive this "X" for over 300K. at the rate we are travling could happen in another 5 years,
Thanks for any help
Ken

Re: 5" Exhaust Systems

I installed a 5" Hypermax system about 6 monthes ago. Very pleased with there fit and finish. As for performance and fuel milage, the turbo seemed to spool up faster. No fuel milage increase worth noting.I am now just getting ready to install gauges so I couldn't tell you if there was egt. drop.It is kind of loud but Hypermax offers a larger muffler if you think it may be to loud. I'm very pleased with my exhaust system. Now that I'm adding more mods I'm sure it will be more benifical in the long run.

Re: 5" Exhaust Systems

I'd be conserned about fit and clearance with a 5". I have a 4" Magnaflow and had to really tweak it after having it installed. It's really tight! I can't imagine anything larger than a 3.5" DP either. Now I see why everone has gotten away from 4" DP's.

Re: 5" Exhaust Systems

The DP on a Hypermax 5" only uses a 3.5 DP the increases to 5" under the truck the bends around the rear end and fuel tank are perfect fit. No clearance problems at all.

Re: 5" Exhaust Systems

Thanks for the replies but still would like to know how much the EGT dropped and any MPG improvement?

Thanks

Re: 5" Exhaust Systems

From reading TONS of posts on this board, 5" seems to be extreme overkill unless you are dragging your truck at a track regularly. 4" seems to be the way to go, but with a 3.5" downpipe. A lot of people have experienced lag at the low end of the RPMs with a 4" downpipe...especially if you are not running a hot chip.

In fact, I know a few people that believe a 3.5" straight-piped exhaust performs about as well as a 4" kit with straight-through muffler (there is still some back-pressure formed with those mufflers).

If it were me, I'd go with a 4" exhaust kit with a 3.5" downpipe. Then buy a 5" or 6" stainless tip so that it LOOKS like a 5" or 6" exhaust.

Simply my two pennies.

Re: 5" Exhaust Systems

Anyone make a 5" aluminum system with a 4" downpipe?

Re: 5" Exhaust Systems

How about a 5" exhaust with a 4" downpipe that's not stainless?

Re: 5" Exhaust Systems

I did alot of searching and the only one I found that even made a 5" for a X is Hypermax but it only was offered with a 3.5 DP. And it's a Alunimized pipe. FJF
