Recently my ABS warning light comes on right after putting the vehicle in motion. If I shut the Ex. off then it goes off with the system. Upon restart the light comes on during the test cycle and then goes off. It will stay off until the vehicle rolls a few feet and then it comes on and stays on. I checked the two connectors just behind the two front wheel mud flaps to make sure they were plugged in well and not corroded. I can't find the rear sensors to check. Is it the same transducer on the top of the differential that the system uses for the ABS on the rear (i.e. the speed sensor)? My brake pads are low (less than a quarter inch of pad) and will be replaced soon. Could the low brake fluid level (due to the wear on the pads and subsequent filling of the piston void) cause the ABS to light as a warning to check and service the brakes? Any experience with the ABS systems would be appreciated. I also have read that where the ABS sensor connects to the front hub assembly is where the bearings are. Could the bearing be failing thereby causing metal to false the ABS sensor and light the warning light? Thanks in advance for the help!

Check the VSS on the rear diff. Take it out and chances are it it is covered in slim. Clean put back in and should work,if not new one may be needed. Cost about 20.00 bucks.

OK, based on the advice I checked the VSS tonight. The connector looked great inside and the contacts almost new. I removed the sensor with a 3/8 socket and pulled it out and cleaned it off. A little gunk on the sides of it but almost none on the bottom face that senses the moving metal teeth. Reassembled all and went for a test drive. ABS light still comes on. Went out on the freeway and tested the cruise and it operated fine. No hesitation of the speedo, no flashing of the OD light. Based on this I am assuming that it is not the VSS but something else. Any more ideas? I guess I'll have to have the codes checked at some point.

Just a follow up and a thanks to all for the VSS advice. I called the Ford service rep and described the issue and he indicated that many times the ABS warning light will come on if the VSS sensor is weak or damaged. That was enough for me to gamble and visit the parts guy. $23 later and another confirmation from the parts guy who said he "Sells a lot of them" gave me more confidence. After the 5 minute replacement and subsequent test drive all is well and no more ABS light. I guess the ABS circuitry must be more sensitive to the pulse width or amplitude then the speedo/cruise or tranny. Nevertheless thanks for the advice. Probably saved at least $100 and the satisfaction of doing it successfully myself!
