AC Musty odors

What would cause a "musty" odor coming from the AC.

It happens rarely, and disapates after a few minutes. I can't predict when it will happen.

Since I always sit in the front I suppose its from the front system.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: AC Musty odors

It usually happens because the drains on the rear ac get plugged up and you get mold/mildew growing in there. It's pretty easy to fix with some "spray" product but I can't remember the name.

Regards,
Dave

Re: AC Musty odors

I get the same for a few seconds and then it is gone. I have had it in many other trucks and cars so it must be common and as long as it goes away it can't be too bad.

Re: AC Musty odors

What does help is running vent(no AC) for a minute before you shut down the car or truck, that'll help get some of the moisture out.

Re: AC Musty odors

I also never shut my truck off with the system in MAX A/C or OFF. Both of those seal the system and can allow condensation to form inside it.

Re: AC Musty odors

If it's unbearable AND still under warranty, you can take it in and they'll clean it out for you one time. After that your on your own.
I have done like AJ'sDad said, a few minutes before you get to your destination put it on regular AC and that will help. I haven't had "tha stink" since then.

Re: AC Musty odors

Both the #709 & the #708 should help. Both are listed on this page: http://www.bgprod.com/bgprofessional...ts/aircon.html

Re: AC Musty odors

I have sprayed Lysol or Purex disinfectant spray into the intake before shutting down for the night. It works for about 2-3 weeks and seems to kill the mold. About $3.00 a can if I remember correctly.

This is what the owners manual recommends.

Which intake are you referring to? Where is it and can I reach it?

The intake is for the heater/AC fresh air and on mine is located on the passenger side, just under the wind shield wiper. Your AC has to be on "Normal" and not "Max". Set fan on a middle speed and let the fan suck the spray in until you can smell it strong in the cab.
Works for me every time.
