I was wondering if the 6.0L X should have an AIC(aux. idle control) added to the engine as I know the Super Duty's have this option. I had called my local dealer today and they said that the 6.0L idles at 70PSI and needs 40PSI to hold oil pressure. Apparently the AIC unit is not offered for the X as the Superduty's are. I had asked if there was a calibration difference between the two but the Diesel tech said no,all 6.0L idle higher and don't need the AIC unit. How true is this. Why is it still offered to the Super Duty's with the 6.0L but not to the X? Thanks.
I'd say the tech is full of it. They just don't put the AIC "plug" in the X, so you'd have to wire it up. I'm not sure if it's exactly the same as the 7.3 or not, so you'd probably be the first. Wiring one into the 7.3 was very easy though. (there's a good writeup on this forum)

Dave
PS - I think you only need the AIC if you intend to idle for extended periods . .say greater than 4-5 minutes (when warm). JMHO

That tech is an idiot. The AIC is used to elevate idle speed to prevent wet stacking, not maintain oil pressure. I know with my 7.3, F*rd says not to idle for more than 10 minutes to prevent engine damage. I assume the same applies for the 6.0.
I've got one on mine. Does a great job of keeping the A/C blowing ice cold air in the summer when parked!
Ok, I'm lost. I thought an AIC was for increasing RPM's for PTO use. I kick in mine on a PSD Mason Dump Body when using the PTO. I thought my X could idle forever and typically let it do so rather than shut-down early and roast the turbo. Ford calls for a min. of 7-10 idle after a good highway run to cool things down. At 10 minutes should I shut-down for fear of "engine damage"?

Ok, maybe I was a bit simplistic with the AIC. It has 3 functions, as far as I know:
1. Raise idle speed
2. Charge protect (keeps batteries from discharging duing heavy electrical use...think ambulance)
3. PTO controller
The real way to know when to turn of the truck is to have a Pyrometer. If you don't have one or don't want one, I have some practical experience for you. I've never had to idle the truck longer than 5 minutes, even after towing heavy in the summer. Longer than that, I feel, is just wasting fuel.
Yup, that matches my experiences . .long tow with heavy trailer, hot day and 5 minutes of idling and it's down below 300 degree's pre-turbo. If I haven't been into it hard, then maybe 3 minutes max, but usually 1-2.

Dave

Exactly. During the winter I can usually subtract about a minute or two.
It's actually cold-stacking, and the main use I have for the AIC is to keep the A/C working in the desert, and the heater working when I'm up snowboarding...
