Question Airflow into box and filter.

I am wondering, while checking under my hood to fit a Tymar 6637 I noticed there is a plastic shield blocking airflow directly into the intake next to the battery in the stock box. There is a small hole cut in it, but I think that was for the block heater cord (I mounted the marine grade plug in my bumper) is there a reason not to cut a big hole so air gets in the box more freely? I could always rig up some sort of bracket and mount a pre filter if thats the concern. Whats everyones ideas?

I could be wrong here, maybe i don't understand your question. I think what you are seeing is a cover or just the box for the cold air intake. The battery kind of sits in the middle of that. There is a chamber that leads up from the grill that is supposed to feed in cooler outside air. Alot of people who are making performance mods take all that out and install an air filter kit that replaces all that. And alot of people leave it all stock. Sorry if that doesn't answer what you are asking.

No, the black plastic I am talking about is a sheet inside the grill, in front of the rectangular intake on the battery box, it appears to block any outside air from directly entering the intake, it does allow engine compartment air to be drawn in though.

I'm thinking of cutting either a round hole and sticking a soffit vent in or a rectangular whole cut to size so a vent screen say for a exhaust hood will fit. Then its easily replaces if need be and Im not reinventing anything.
