Alternator is dead!!!

A family emergency has taken my to NY but before I left the alternator in my 03 X 4x4 Ltd took a crap. Has anyone swapped one of these out yet? How difficult was it? I am flying home in a few days and would like to know what I am getting myself into.

Where is the alternator located anyways? I have not had a chance to look.

Thanks in advance,
~A

Re: Alternator is dead!!!

I recently replaced mine. It takes about 30 minutes. There is an adjustment pully located on the upper left (passenger side) of the front pully system. Put a 1/2 drive ratchet in the hole located on the front of the pully. Release the tension on the belt by cranking towards the passenger fender. Slide the belt off the alternator located on the top right side. Loosen the three bolds (13mm) and unplug the wire harnes. There is a final (10mm) bold holding the main power wire that is easier to remover when the Alternator is loose. Slide the new one in ($149 at Auto Zone LTW) and put it back together. One of the easiest to change in my opinion.

Re: Alternator is dead!!!

They are about the worst alternator ever made. Mine has went out and a buddy had one go too. I got a Heavy Duty one from here http://www.alternatorparts.com/Ford_3G.htm he got it here in just a day or two and it's been great ever since. I did have to put a different plug on it and grind about 2mm off the bracket to get it to clear. It's a much bigger and MUCH heavier duty! I got the 200 amp.

Re: Alternator is dead!!!

I think you have the 7.3 PSD correct? The new one just arrived and I mounted it up to the location the old one was in. However, the belt tensioner pulley is not the one you state. Does anyone know where the belt tensioner pulley is located on a 2003 4x4 Excusrion with a 6.0 PSD? I imagine I will just need to put a socket or whatnot on the bolt and it should loosen the belt enough for me to slide it over the alternator pulley and make sure the belt is properly aligned everywhere. I hope this is correct.

Thanks in advance,
~A
