I want to take the body side cladding off my X to smooth it out a little.
Anybody done this?
Once I drill out the rivets, will the cladding fall off, or is it also held in place wtih tape?
Thanks,
Troy
P.S. Who needs a set of black cladding
Hey and hi captn'
Aye mate when they installed the fiberglass running boards on my X they had to remove the clading on it. I left what was on the doors attached. The moulding that goes from wheelweld to wheelweld is put on with moulding tape and it came off fairly easy. It is in the garage.
A while back there was a few that had done what you are talking about so if you will lookback in the previous pages and the archives maybe you can find them.
Take care and good luck and hope this helps a little

I took off all the cladding my Limited---that goldish colored stuff!!!......no, it will not fall off---you have to pull pretty hard. I even loosened it a bit w/a heat gun. The whole job took about an hour, and in my opinion, the truck looks a zillion times better. If you're going to do it, you'll find that behind the rear wheel wells, there are a few holes which require you to get a part called a "stone guard." If you look on an XLT, you'll see the parts that I mean!!
I spoke with the body shop at the dealer where I purchased mine. The one I bought had a scratch on the drivers side rear above the cladding. They had to remove the cladding to paint it. They are held on by tape and the body person told me that I could pull them off and the remaining glue from the tape would come off by rubbing with my finger. I have not done this yet. They also told me that it is very difficult if not impossible to reuse them, something about not being perfectly flush against the body. I would be interested in the black cladding might be worth trying to put it on. I have the gold.
I am one of the few who installed the cladding on my XLT. I purchased the cladding used. It was a little wavey but with a heat gun it smoothed out.It was a fairly simple job to install for my wife and myself on a Saturday morning. As mentioned you have to remove the moulding that is on the lower part of the doors and the black rear fender mud guard mouldings. The cladding attaches with 2 sided tape that you buy at a body shop parts center. I also replaced the black boards with the tan ones. Make sure the old tape is off all parts and use cleaner to remove all the residue. The fender mouldings are also held into place with the plastic pushin lock bolts. Mine has been installed for 6-7 months and is holding up well. IMO my truck looks better with it. Ford must have agreed because I was told they discontinued my color in the XLT.
If anyone is interested in the parts I removed let me know.

I just ordered a new limited and would be interested in black lighted running boards, black bumper pads, and black cladding.
Is the cladding really black. In the book I think they call it platnium. Please emai me any info. Thanks

I just saw the pics that Capntroy has and may not need black running boards or bumper-pads.
Capn, Are those pics of a 02 limited? Where did they come from??
My goal was to get rid of the tan on the outside of the x. Those pics show it not having any tan. So I sure hope that is how they will come.
Does anyone else have info on the 02's. I have placed an order without being entirely sure of what I bought.

Troy, am in Chattanooga Tn. Your X looks very good. I have only seen one No Boundries X, it had grey insert in the bumper, yours has same as mine, tan.
Copeland - I just went back and looked at my X photos and the front view photo does look like it has a lower tan insert. It must have been how the sun hit the car because that really is a black plastic insert.
