What kind of truck do you have? Is your truck a standard or Auto? What year is your truck? The 03's and newer with the Torqshift 5-speed auto are very stout. I've towed all over with my truck and haven't had a hint of trouble. I like the Torqshift better than anything else in my truck.

Although I have the V10, we have the same tranny. I've had zero problems with mine, despite towing a heavy trailer. I change the fluid and filter every 24 months.

Ya know from what I've seen it seems like it is kinda luck of the draw with these trannys. I have been pretty hard on mine, towing some heavy stuff, drag racing, truck pulling and daily driving and it held up. I did change it out for a BTS tranny at 90K, but that was just for my piece of mind. I knew it would not last all that much longer, but did I know when it might go out? No. Who knows how much longer it would have lasted.
I did have the Banks Transcommand on from about 50K until I got my BTS, so maybe that helped. I also used good programming throughout the life of my stock tranny and didn't go too wild with mods until after I got my BTS.
You might get lucky and have a good tranny and it might last for a very long time, or it could go out tomorrow. Even with no mods.
Richter69 would be a great guy to PM and ask him what you can do to make the stock tranny last longer.

Even if you don't want to do a whole tranny call Brian at BTS. They sell valve bodies that will increase the life of your trans. It will shift better and prolong the life.

Ok so you have a 2000 with the 7.3l Powerstroke and the (I think) 4R100 transmission. This was not a bad trans the only catch was you had to be careful when backing a trailer. You could not go a far distance nor up a steep grade. For some reason the cooling in reverse is greatly reduced so many have fried this trans when backing up a steep driveway. Do not put any load (or very little) on the truck when in reverse. Also do not downshift into a lower gear then 2nd when trying to slow down. If you try to shift into first you will throw a gear. Keep the trans fluid clean and otherwise just treat it as you would any other auto trans. If you decide to chip the truck (you should resist the urge) but if you do, plan to replace the trans soon thereafter. If you haven’t yet, you should change the transfer case fluid which is also ATF and start to look at changing the gear oil in the axles. I would immediately check the axle fluid levels, the Dana axles tend to burn bearings the second the fluid goes low. You may want to consider converting the cooling system to the gold coolant. The green has a stringent maintenance regiment and the gold is a little easier to maintain. Look here in another thread on how to do the conversion. I suggest you spend some time looking around reading all of the posts you can. Jump over to the 7.3 forum and the archived 7.3 forum (I can’t seem to find a way to search the archived forums but if there is a way maybe somebody can post the procedure).
