Okay bought a set of Hella Black magic lights on the way home yesterday. Looking for some different mounting options, drilling the bumper or installing a pushbar not an option. Remember seeing someone's X awhile back that mounted a set of lights behind their grill, any problems with projections? Where are those dang pics (looked briefly, but forgot the subject they were posted under).
Out of all the pics I look at of folks trucks, when I see one I remember certain things, and the pic I was referencing in the previous post WAS your truck I remembered the Xtree!
That was what I had in mind was to fab a bracket to attach to the vertical posts behind the grill. Any problem with the projection of the light thru the grill?
No problem with light projection, but the lights should be far enough back to leave room to aim. Did you see the newer picture, it has a better view. I actually get more use out of the yellow fog lights, cheap ones out of JC Whitney mounted in the bumper. The Hella's are wired to the low beam circuit and the fogs to the parking lights. You can use the factory through the firewall wires, to hook up the lights. The are located on the drivers side of the firewall near the brake booster. One more thing, I used the horizontal part of the grill support to mount the lights.
Okay got a question, Did you mount directly thru the bottom fiberglass surrounding the grill? Right now I have the bolts about as tight as it will go, and the lamps seem to flex on the fiberglass and vibrate .
Well got them mounted and wired yesterday. Still need to fine tune their alignment. Readjusted the lights so they would be resting firm against the grill, helped with the vibration problem. Cheated and used preexisting locations for mounting the relay and fuses. Used the mounting screws for the washer fluid and coolant tank. Mounted the toggle switch above the drivers side headlamp assembly out of the way, I really did not want to drill any holes in the dash. While I was at it, went ahead and did Steve Racers fog light mod. That has to be the most straight forward and easiest mod I have done to date
The install looks good. For the vibration I cut up a hard sponge block sander and wedged it between the radiator support and the light housing. Kinda of a rig job but it works and you can't see it as the sanding block is black in color.
