Well, before I go under the knife in two weeks, I decided to try one last attempt at finding out about installing the APCM or Aux. Idle Controller on my soon to arrive EXCURSION. What I found out was the following from the two lead Electrical Engineers on the EXCURSION PROJECT. (Yes, I spoke with real live people at FORD, yet again!)
The EXCURSION does not have the connector to plug the APCM into. The connector consists of four pins that are connected to the PCM (Powertrain Control Module).
What we need to do is the following:
1. Connect the Tan/Red wire of the APCM cable to 12V Key Power.
2. Connect the Black wire of the APCM cable to Ground.
The remaining two wires are a twisted pair. (WARNING: THEY MUST STAY TWISTED EXCEPT AT WHERE YOU MAKE THE SPLICE OR CONNECTION. THESE ARE DATA LINES AND REQUIRE TO BE TWISTED TOGETHER!)
3. Connect the BUS+ Red/Blue wire of the APCM cable to the TAN/ORANGE wire from the PCM Pin# 16.
4. Connect the BUS- white/violet wire of the APCM cable to the PINK/LIGHT BLUE wire from the PCM Pin# 15.
I specifically asked if the APCM or the PATS would interfer with one another and was told that it would not and that their test vehicle has a breakout box that allows them to have a APCM.
As soon as I am healthy enough to install my APCM I will. Should be mid to late March. If anyone decides to do so before I instal my unit please post back.
Regards, and Good Luck
I forgot to add the following:
PCM connector number is C1027. I was told but have not verified that the two data lines are also available at the OBDIII connector.
The wire numbers for the two data lines are
Pin 15 wire #915 BUS-
Pin 16 wire #914 BUS+

I ordered the plug last week and have the aux idle controller ready to install. I took the manual home from the dealership last week and was ready to wire it this week. I did not know about the twisted wires however. You may have saved me a lot of trouble on this install. I will let you know how it goes.

Did you order the connector that would normally be in the vehicle? If so can you post the part number? I rather not hard wire my APCM, much better to use the plug.

Hi guys,
Have either of you looked into the "fast idle control" sold by Diesel services? http://www.dieselservices.com/controls.htm
I was hoping to find an idle control that was a little more stylish than Ford's. I emailed them to see if it would work on an Excursion, thier reply:

There is some discussion about this idle control in earlier posts. I, of course am just talking here, I don't have an Excursion, yet. I found out this week that mine is schedualed to be built the week of 2/28!!
I contacted Diesel Services awhile back and I remember that the price was about $500. Thats why I decided to call SmokeyWrens friend at White Motor Co., Mr. Louder.

JCK:
Connector was supposed to be in today. Truck didn't arrive so it will now be in on Friday. I will give you part number from the wrapper. Thanks for your info about the wires.
Regarding the other aftermarket Aux idle control. I paid a lot less than the price you stated. And it is OEM.

VMAC out of Canada sell an aux. ilde control requires no cutting or splicing of wires. You unplug leads from foot throttle plug them into throttle control then plug throttle control into the truck. Basicly putting it inline with an on off switch mounted where you want it. When it's off foot pedal operates normaly turn on and it takes you to a preselected RPM

That is the same Unit I purchased. Hopefully the plug will come in tomorrow and I can get it hooked up this weekend. I will surely keep you informed of my demise or my success. Thanks for assisting in this project.

I decided to purchase the FORD AIC w/LCD. I have seen advertised units that are cheaper and more expensive than the FORD one. I do perfer the FORD version, just to try to keep consistant with reliability (good or bad). So far the documentation that I have read seems to tell me that the FORD version is able to store four programs. I only need one though.
Don't forget to post when you made your additions.
Regards.

The install went great! Thanks for your info. It really is a neat gadget. I might be wrong, but your recovery from surgery, might not let you twist as much as these wires require. The space is confined and most of the time you are on your knees or back. If you have any one else mechanically inclined. Get them to splice and you supervise. E-mail me and I will give you my cell phone number and we will install it together. Good Luck with your surgery. You are going to enjoy that Excursion with all those toys and gadgets when you recover.

Great to hear everything went well. Do you happen to have the part number for that connector? I would like to order it. If not, I already have my stuff ready with quick connectors on and tagged, ready to install. The best man from my wedding happens to own a Muffler shop. So on a Sunday we plan on hooking everything up in a nice warm shop with a lift.

The biggest headache I had was with the connector. He got one off the spare shelf not in a wrapper so I could not tell you the part number. The one they sent was a 2 prong connector which was definately wrong. Sounds like you have the set up for install once it arrives.

No, the connector for the APCM is NOT installed on the Excursion. But all of the wireing is there. The two main wires you need to access are available just to your right knee at the OBDIII connector, both of the +/- Bus wires are located there. Plus you will need 12V and ground. All of this is written up in my other posts.

Ben

Does the PATS connector occupy the connector for the APCM? If so, can I simply disconnect the PATS and put the APCM in place of it, or do I need to manually splice in to get the APCM going?
Either way, where's the best place to go for 12V key-on power and ground near the PCM?

What is the purpose for having an idle controller? Does it help the engine with performance and if so how? Forgive me for not knowing, but I will be buying my first PSD X next month and I am trying to become educated.
